Minutes 06-22-23 MINUTES OF THE EDUCATION AND YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD MEETING, HELD ON JUNE 22, 2023, AT 6:00 P.M. AT CITY HALL COMMISSION CHAMBERS 100 E. OCEAN AVENUE, BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA PRESENT: Pedro Macedo, Acting Chair Franky Lazo, Assistant Director, Recreation Francoise Calixte-Dieuvil and Parks Chevette Gadson Nicholas Giacalone ABSENT: Frando Patterson Dr. Valeric Valcourt Lori Wilkinson Katie Houswweart, Alt. Jessica Wilkinson, Student I. Call to Order In the absence of the Chair and Vice Chair, Mr. Macedo acted as Chair for the meeting and called the meeting to Order at 6:20 P.M. II. Pledge of Allegiance The members recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. III. Roll Call Roll was called. A quorum was present. Mr. Lazo stated that those absent requested an excused absence. IV. Approval of Agenda— June 22, 2023 Motion Ms. Gadson moved to approve. Ms. Calixte-Dieuvil seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Ms. Calixte-Dieuvil seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. VI. Announcements/Presentations/Correspondence Mr. Lazo announced that the Juneteenth Event went well and was well attended. He said that the event included a pitmaster styled grill-off, and that the winner received a WWE style belt. He announced that the 4th of July Event was coming up at Intracoastal Park. He mentioned that the Department is in the middle of summer camp at the Hester and Sims Centers, and the Junior Lifeguard Program at the pool, where the youth learn fitness and first aid. He said that the new FunFare Magazine is out, and he encouraged the members to obtain a copy. VII. Public Audience None. VIII. Old Business A. Fundraising Proposals & Outreach Acting Chair Macedo said that he thought Fundraising Proposals and Outreach should be discussed after the Youth Summit. Mr. Lazo explained that he is keeping the item on the agenda as a recurring item. B. Youth Summit Event Acting Chair Macedo announced that they have the Youth Summit Event coming up. He commented that it would be better for Chair Valcourt to give the update, and he suggested waiting until the next meeting when she would be present, as Chair Valcourt was working on some items. He explained that the last two subcommittee meetings did not occur and the event is supposed to be held July 29th. He noted that at the last meeting, they discussed who the speakers were, and there were assignments given for members to reach out to people. Mr. Lazo stated that the entire Arts and Cultural Center is reserved, but if the event is not well attended, they can adjust the meeting spaces down to a more intimate setting and use fewer or just one room. Ms. Calixte-Dieuvil asked if they could change move the date of the Summit. 2 Meeting Minutes Education and Youth Advisory Board Boynton Beach,Fda _ _ __ June-22—, 2,023 Mr. Lazo asked for alternate dates and said that he would contact everyone and he will have to contact the Cultural Center,. Ms. Calixte-Dieuvil suggested the second weekend after school opens, the 12th or the 19th. Discussion followed that the reason the Board started to work on this event three and four months ago was to have everything ready by now. Acting Chair Macedo stated that having a Zoom meeting will be crucial, because they have the venue, but letters were not sent and the event is a month out. A definite update was needed and they need to determine if they want to move forward. Mr. Lazo suggested for next year, that they may want to partner the Recreation and Parks Department with their Youth Symposium in April. He explained that they partner with the Boys and Girls Club at the Sims Center. C. Bob Borovy Student Citizen of the Year Award Acting Chair Macedo stated that they presented the award at the June 6th City Commission Meeting. Mr. Lazo explained that the award is made in a non-biased way, as no names are submitted with the entries to the judges, that there are three judges and Jessica Wilkinson was selected. He announced that Jessica Wilkinson received a plaque and her name was added to a plaque that listed prior winners. He said that it is displayed in the Visitor Center, along with information on who Bob Borovy was. He noted that Ms. Wilkinson performed about 1,100 hours of volunteer work. IX. Future Meeting Dates: July 27, 2023 Acting Chair Macedo announced the next meeting date. Mr. Giacalone asked about the account balance. It was explained that after the Borovy Award payment is made, there was $943.55, but they will receive funds from SunFest, from the sale of beverages and tips, so the total amount was unknown. It was also noted that they were still awaiting word on the disposition of the Sweets Foundation donation, and that the Board also holds a Fall Fest, which also is a fundraiser. X.
