A. Youth Council Workshop Report
Chair St. John remarked that the members had the minutes and that they were self-
explanatory. She commented that the Board sought the backing of the Recreation
Department for starting up the Youth Council and asked Ms. Claude to invite them to the
next workshop.
A discussion ensued about the Youth Council and a need for organization and focus was
emphasized. Also, within the parameters of the Youth Council's mission, it was felt that
the students needed to have activities that engaged their minds and energies.
A date was set for another workshop on January 19, 2002 at 9:30 a.m. at the Library.
This workshop was to focus on the Youth Council and the Volunteer Project. The
Volunteer Project is "up in the air" due to not having heard from the Boy Scouts or the
Parks Department.
B. Volunteer Project at Rolling Green
This item was pending at the end of the meeting. Chair St. John and Ms. Geathers were
to contact each other, but no resolution was achieved at the time of sending out the
minutes.
C. Visiting Speakers Program
Vice Chair Waldman asked that this issue be tabled until after the holidays.
Ms. Wilkinson suggested a program called Aggressors, Victims and Bystanders being
done by a police officer that works with the Lantana Middle School. It deals with what to
do if someone tells you they have a gun or know of a plot. She thought it would be good
to have this in Boynton Beach. The Board agreed that it was good and ~;cc Chair
Waldma~ Lori Wilkinson offered to cheCk with the Boynton Beach Police to see what
programs they had before pursuing it. If the officer does come to speak, the Boynton
Beach Police Department should be invited to attend to see if such a program
could/should be incorporated into its own programs.
D. Youth Volunteer Bank
The Board expressed appreciation for the wonderful job done by the liaison, Sherri
Claude, on this program. Her postcards had generated quite a bit of interest among the
teens, including Chair St. John's own children. Ms. Claude stated that one of the recent
notes she had sent out requested help for the after-care program and 4 to 5 teens had
responded. Everyone was pleased with this result.
Chair St. John asked Ms. Claude if she could put together a package to be sent to the
guidance counselors at the local schools. Ms. Claude offered to do so but stated that

she believed the packages should be sent to a particular person and she needed the
names. A suggestion was also made that the packages should also be sent to the
Youth departments of the local churches. Ms. Hattie Miller will find out the appropriate
names for the local churches and forward the information to Ms. Claude. Ms. Claude
pointed out that she would need the name of the church or school, its address, phone
number, fax number, and web address (if available), as well as the name of the Youth
Director, Guidance Counselor, or contact person. Ms. Claude's e-mail address:
claudes~ci.boynton-beach.fl.us, was announced at the meeting. Her telephone number
is 742-6224.
Vice Chair Waldman will determine this information for Christa McAuliffe and Congress
Middle; Hattie Miller will take Poinciana; Welton Sanders will take Boynton Beach High
School, Forest Park, and St. Marks; Lori Wilkinson will take South Tech and Santaluces;
Chair St. John will take Lake Worth Christian, St. Joseph's and Odyssey; Willie Pearl
Wilson will take Rolling Green. Former board member, Dorothy Davis, was present in
the audience and offered to handle the call to Galaxy Elementary School.
Chair St. John summed up by saying that the board members would determine the
contact information and forward the information to Ms. Claude. Ms, Claude will put
together a cover letter to go with the applications and the packages and try to get them
out by the end of January.
Chair St. John reminded the Board members that money was still needed for sponsors
for the Youth Volunteer Banquet. If a letter is needed, the members can contact Ms.
Claude and request that she send a letter to the organization.
E. Bob Borovy Award/Scholarship
A $500 check was received from Mr. Borovy's family for this scholarship. Vice Chair
Waldman stated that the applications were ~eady but not yet sent out to the schools.
Chair St. John noted that the Banquet was going to be in May and that the responses
would have to be back a week before that. She asked Vice Chair Waldman to inquire
about the availability of the Civic Center for the banquet.
F. Youth Expo
The program is set for October 26-27, 2002. So far, the Palm Beach Post has agreed to
be a sponsor and letters asking for sponsorship have been sent to Hunter's Run and
Washington Mutual Bank.
Chair St. John asked Ms. Claude to include a listing of revenue and expenses for the
CYAB with the minutes.
