Advisory Board Minutes
August 22, 2001
Present: Board members: Dorothy Walker, Valerie Pleasanton, 3. R. Pineau, Dan Holthouse, Marion Grammer.
Alternates: .ludy Sanders, .Donna Harmening.
Library Director: Virginia Farace.
Absent: Herb Suss, Marva Collins
Chair Valerie Pleasanton called the meeting to order at 3:20. The minutes from both the May 2 and .luly 25
meetings were read and approved.
There was no incoming correspondence; however, Valerie sent a letter to the city manager requesting that the
money that had been set aside for tee shirts be used to purchase books for the library. She has received no
response as of this date.
Virginia informed the Board she received an e-mail today that the city manager has requested afl departments
with advisory boards to buy name plaques to be used during meetings. After discussion a motion was made
recommending that library funds should not be used for name plaques and that cardboard or paper badges or
signs can be used on the rare occasions when we have visitors. The motion was approved unanimously.
Valerie reported that she spoke with Virginia to discuss Herb Suss's idea of a golf tournament that would raise
funds for the library. The recommendation was to suggest this idea to the Friends of the Library, as it would be a
more appropriate project for the Friends.
Virginia reported on the Board's suggestion, to inform the public that small gifts can be made to purchase books.
She handed out the forms that are available at the Friends' desk and the Board suggested that this program
should be promoted more to raise additional funds.
Virginia reported on the budget. No additional money for the book fund was added dudng the budget workshop.
Public hearings will be held on Sept. 5 and :1.9. Board members agreed to send letters, make phone calls and/or
attend one or both meetings.
Virginia presented a draft of the library's long-range plan. The Board recommended that the City Commission
approve the plan as presented.
Virginia reported that the Boynton Beach Library was the 4th highest ranking in the state for construction grants.
She showed the plans for the new library and gave an update on the Schoolhouse Museum. She also announced
that September is PowerCard month, and the library is once again working with McDonalds to award incentive
gifts to newly registered borrowers.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:45.
