Minutes 07-27-23 MINUTES OF THE EDUCATION AND YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD MEETING HELD ON JULY 27, 2023, AT 6:00 P.M. IN COMMISSION CHAMBERS, 100 E. OCEAN AVENUE PRESENT: Dr. Valerie Valcourt, Chair Franky Lazo, Assistant Director, Recreation Pedro Macedo and Parks Chevette Gadson Katie Houseweart, Alt. ABSENT: Francoise Calixte-Dieuvil Nicholas Giacalone Frando Patterson Lori Wilkinson Jessica Wilkinson, Student I. Call to Order Chair Valcourt called the meeting to order at 6:06 P.M. II. Pledge of Allegiance The members recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. III. Roll Call Roll was called. A quorum was present. Mr. Lazo stated that Lori Wilkinson requested an excused absence. IV. Approval of Agenda – July 27, 2023 Motion Ms. Houseweart moved to approve. Mr. Macedo seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. V. Approval of Minutes – June 22, 2023 Motion Ms. Gadson moved to approve the minutes. Mr. Macedo seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Meeting Minutes Education and Youth Advisory Board Boynton Beach, Florida July 27, 2023 VI. Announcements/Presentations/Correspondence None. VII. Public Audience None. VIII. New Business A. Frequency of Meetings Mr. Lazo noticed the lack of attendance and suggested changing the number of meetings from monthly to quarterly. Chair Valcourt stated that they should remain monthly to be in preparation for the Youth Summit. Ms. Gadson noted that educators are on the Board and that they take off during the summer for various reasons. Chair Valcourt suggested in April or May that they discuss summer meetings to accommodate the Educators. Mr. Lazo stated that the members can discuss when to meet next, each month, on a case-by- case basis. B. Board Liaison Absence Mr. Lazo stated that he will be out as early as August through October. Sherri Claude, Recreation Administrator, or another team member will replace him during this time. IX. Old Business A. Fundraising Proposals & Outreach Chair Valcourt stated that she reached out to School Board Member Edwin Ferguson to attend a Board Meeting to create a plan for outreach, for the district, within this area at the next meeting that will be held August 24, 2023. She said that she will follow-up to coordinate a time for him to attend. She stated that it is important to ensure that Boynton schools are receiving what they need. Chair Valcourt stated that she was aware of a vacancy at Boynton Beach High School needing a Principal. Ms. Houseweart expressed concern that procedures are followed, as it was not in the recent past. 2 Meeting Minutes Education and Youth Advisory Board Boynton Beach, Florida July 27, 2023 Mr. Lazo said that he would send the letters written by former Board Member Prado to the Board, to review about the hiring process. Chair Valcourt stated that funds were received from working the booth at SunFest. B. Youth Summit Event – New Date / Partnership Chair Valcourt stated that they will try to hold the Youth Summit next summer and to contact sponsors and the schools. Mr. Lazo suggested that the Board select a new date for the Youth Summit, or combine it with the Parks & Recreation’s Youth Symposium. Chair Valcourt suggested that a department representative attend a Board Meeting to discuss the event. C. Bob Borovy Student Citizen of the Year Award Chair Valcourt stated that Jessica Wilkinson received the award for 2023. X. Future Meeting Dates: August 24, 2023 Chair Valcourt announced the next meeting date. XI. Adjournment Motion There being no further business before the Board, Ms. Gadson moved to adjourn.
