Minutes 11-07-01 MINUTES OF THE COMMUNITY RELATIONS BOARD HELD IN CITY HALL COMPLEX, CONFERENCE ROOM C BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA, ON WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2001 Present Ron Washam, Chairman Beth Miller, Vice Chairperson Anne Centi Michele Costantino Joy Currier Eddie Mitchell Stuart Heyer, Alternate Hansome Jones, Alternate Dan DeCarlo, Staff Liaison Absent Blanche Girtman Brenda Lee Williams Juanita Summers I. Opening, Pledge of Allegiance The meeting was called to order at 6:10 p.m. Stuart Heyer led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. II. Roll Call - Regular Members and Alternates The Recording Secretary called the roll and declared that a quorum was present. II1. Recognition of Visitors Chairman Washam extended a welcome from the Community Relations Board to the following visitors: Alice Otis, Daniel Thiemann, and lan Schmidt. IV. Approval of Minutes of October 3, 2001 Motion Vice Chair Miller moved to approve the minutes of the October 3, 2001 meeting as submitted. Ms. Currier seconded the motion that carried unanimously. V. Agenda Approval Motion Ms. Anne Centi moved to approve the agenda as presented. Vice Chair Miller seconded the motion that carried unanimously. Meeting Minutes Community Relations Board Boynton Beach, Florida November 7, 2001 VI. Correspondence and Announcements Ms. Joy Currier announced that HeadStart would be preparing and delivering more than a thousand turkey dinners on Thanksgiving Day. Chairman Washam thanked Ms. Currier for her steadfast dedication to the project that she had led for many years. HeadStart, in cooperation with the Police Department, prepares food and delivers it to area shut-ins and families in need. Ms. Currier sought donations to fund this effort. Chairman Washam indicated that the Hypoluxo/Lantana Kiwanis organization would also be distributing turkeys on Thanksgiving Day and that he would be submitting at least twenty Boynton Beach names. He asked interested parties to contact him if they desired to participate. Chairman Washam advised that there would be a Four-Board Forum on Saturday, November 17 at the library from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. This forum is held for the purpose of sharing between the people-oriented City Advisory Boards: Senior Advisory Board, Education Advisory Board, Community Relations Advisory Board, and the Advisory Board on Children & Youth. Chairman Washam encouraged people to attend. VII. Old Business None VIII. New Business o:o "United We Stand: Hope and Healing After 9/11", November 15, 2001 at 6:30 p.m. in the Chambers at the Boynton Beach City Hall. Vice Chair Miller told the Board about this special meeting sponsored by the Community Relations Board and the Boynton Beach P.A.T.C.H. (Planned Approach to Community Health) organization. This program is being offered to the public and Vice Chair Miller encouraged the Board members to come a little early to help set things up. The program will feature Russ Accardi from Delray Beach Fire Rescue, who is the lead trainer in Delray Beach and just came back from leading a rescue team at Ground Zero. He will put on a slide presentation followed by a discussion. Dr. Stanley Feist, a licensed mental health counselor working for the American Red Cross, will speak. Dr. Feist just returned from New York where he was training the crisis workers. Mr. Edward Houck, also a licensed mental health counselor, will speak about Post Traumatic Stress and the ways in which we can turn difficulties into positives in our lives. The Red Cross is sending several people as well. There will be a question and answer period after the program. Chairman Washam encouraged the Board members to attend the program since this was the first of many events they hoped to co-host with P.A.T.C.H. in the future. He also stressed that the Community Relations Board would be sitting as a regular Board at the meeting. 2 Meeting Minutes Community Relations Board Boynton Beach, Florida November 7, 2001 Vice Chair Miller commented that the Press was quite interested in the program and that it would be the subject of an article in the Neighborhood Event section of the Palm Beach Post the following week. The Palm Beach Post and the Sun Sentinel newspapers will be at the event and Vice Chair Miller hoped there would also be live television coverage as well. IX. Next Meeting The next meeting of the Community Relations Board will be on December 5. Chairman Washam encouraged the Board members to submit items for the agenda. X.
