JANUARY AGENDA: ·January 4th –Using AI to Answer Questions ·January 11th –Learning with the Digital Library ·January 18th –Camera Settings (iPhone) ·January 25th –How to Spot a Scam You can tell the Snow Birds have come back. All of my tech talk classes for January had at least three people in attendance. The class also has a few people that attend my tech talk at the Senior Center.I’ve also noticed more and more attendees have devices with the Android operating system. It made me realize that I need to try and learn the other operating systems out there. 24 One-on-Ones: An older patron came to me asking for assistance with finding a job.He is retired, but is bored at home and would like to find a part-time job anywhere that he can.He spent 40 years in the construction field, but due to his age,he can’t keep up with being a laborer any more.He dropped out of a school at 15 to go straight into work,so he doesn’t have a high school diploma or GED.Due to this, both of us have been struggling to find a job that would fit.We agreed that he should look into retail like Home Depot. We have met three times already,he has applied for BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT –JANUARY 2024 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT –JANUARY 2024 11 seven positions at various Home Depot locations.Response has been slow, but he hasn’t had a “no”yet. January 29th,I met with a patron that had attended my Senior Center tech talk.We spent our 1:1 working on organizing her photos in her iPhone.I showed her how to create folders and move her pictures into those. We also went over a few basic tech questions. Other notes: On January 16th,I enrolled into IBM Skills Build (https://skills.yourlearning.ibm.com/): “With IBM SkillsBuild, you’ll gain core technology and important workplace skills like:leadership skills, communication skills, programming skills, problem solving skills,and/or writing skills that are aligned to in-demand jobs.Plus, you can earn digital credentials to show employers what you’ve achieved.Earn digital credentials from IBM and other professional organizations—at no cost.Add these credentials to your professional networking profile to showcase your new job skills and boost your job prospects.” It ’s a completely free program.I finished up the “Fit to Learn:Linux System Administrator ”credential: “This credential earner has completed an assessment, the results of which indicate the individual has the skills, abilities, and personality traits to learn more about a career as a Linux System Administrator. The earner shows proficiency at the Linux System Administrator learning readiness level, and can use this knowledge to pursue further education about this career path.” I am working towards a credential in “Artificial Intelligence Fundamentals”.It is a 10-hour course all about AI history, the change in the world, and what AI can and cannot do.All of these classes are completely free to take. The classes are broken down into one-hour sessions that you can stop and start at your own leisure. There is no time frame to finish these classes. For my monthly highlight I would like to share about a student who I have become my helper. This student is in 5th grade, and for their tutoring sessions we have been working on his writing and math and some reading comprehension. This BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT –JANUARY 2024 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT –JANUARY 2024 17 student's mother keeps me updated on this student's progress at school and this student is doing much better than they were at the start of the school year.Since this student has done so well, when they are done with their work, they stay a little extra and help out students that need some help, and this student has been a great help. This student has also given me tools to learn fractions and geometry to help the grades that are just starting to learn it.This student has been a good example for the other students when it comes to staying focused and to being a helping hand. Entering into the 2024 season,I know my student count may increase and I am looking forward to it.I am also looking forward to seeing more of my students soar in their schools and to be able to help them to move to the next grade when the time comes.I will continue to learn all I can for my students to better help them in their studies and will make sure they stay on track to succeed. BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT –JANUARY 2024 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT –JANUARY 2024 18 December 2023 ESOL Report January 2024 ESOL Report Adult ESOL AmeriCorps Devynn Fletcher New students have been added this month to both classes.I now have nine students in each class. In my beginner ’s class, there is a new student from Haiti (the nephew of a student from my intermediate class)and three students from Colombia that went to the class a bit last year.In my intermediate class, there is a new student from Russia,Haiti and Colombia. My students and I are happy to have a full house again. I have also better organized my lesson plans and classroom management by breaking down the weekly structure. On Mondays,I introduce the weekly objective and teach that said objective, like present tense.Tuesdays are mainly focused on talking,Wednesdays on writing, and Thursdays for review and games.I will also do some games and activities throughout the week as well to better engage my students. The new year started with learning “can”and “can’t”in my beginner ’s class. We had fun getting to know each other with the new students,so we talked about different things we can and BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT –JANUARY 2024 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT –JANUARY 2024 19 can’t do.For example, everyone can whistle except me.Then,we did a unit on time (months, seasons, and standard time). We had some friendly competition and split into teams with dry erase boards and wrote the correct time on their board (with me drawing a clock). The students had fun with this game. For the last week of January,we dived deeper into feelings and emotions, along with the verb “to be.”I had fun getting creative with this lesson and did a couple games and activities, like Pictionary (which the students loved)and having them draw emotions on construction paper for what I call The Feelings Game.I say an emotion or feeling, both on its own and in a sentence, and the students individually hold up the drawing of that emotion.I figured this would be a good and fun way to see where everyone is at,since while it is a beginner ’s class, there are varying levels of it between the students. And we leave no student behind here. For my intermediate class,we started the new year reviewing simple present tense but making it a little more complex by adding in various pronouns and making it a conversation between two people.I then introduced them to various time expressions we can say, such as “every day”or “in a while.”The new students also got to know each other. We talked about what different animals we see in our respective countries. We were amazed to learn that Russia has both tigers and bears. Then,we spent time on present and past verbs, like break, broke and cut, cut. We also did a game with these verbs and split into teams with dry erase words.I wrote a verb in present tense on the board, and the teams had to write down the correct verb in the past tense. They loved this, and also requested more games like this. The next week continued with practicing and studying the past tense.I handed out index cards for them to write the present tense of a verb on one side and the past tense on the other.I also handed out Good Job Awards to BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT –JANUARY 2024 BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT –JANUARY 2024 20 my students, because they have been working hard studying and practicing, speaking and writing the past tense.I understand that learning a new language is difficult,so I hope these awards encourage them to keep going.
