N/A Fiscal Impact: N/A Attachments: UNITY PROJECT REPORT.docx Unity Project Grants Budget 7-31-24.xlsx 15 Unity Project Report The Unity Project funded by the Mellon Foundation in partnership with the City of Boynton Beach is successfully underway. After multiple meetings with the Heart of Boynton Neighborhood Association Steering Committee and residents from the Heart of Boynton Neighborhood, there is a need to ask for your consideration regarding category changes relating to the $100,000 grant generously awarded to the City of Boynton Beach from the Mellon Foundation. Since November 2023, at least a dozen Unity Project planning meetings have taken place; however, the citizens of the Heart of Boynton desire to take somewhat of a different direction from the original plan, which to date, the outcomes have been amazing. The Heart of Boynton Neighborhood Association’s Steering Committee decided not to utilize the artist mentioned in the grant as the lead artist. The City of Boynton Beach also advertised to hire a Project Manager to facilitate the Unity Project with no one applying for the position, therefore; multiple City staff members had to manage the project. The fact that city staff managed the project, in place of hiring a Project Manager, provided for additional dollars being spent for community events chosen by the Heart of Boynton. The capacity of this project required much more staff time investment than originally thought. Several city staff members, from various departments, are assigned to manage this very important project as a team. Unity Project City Staff Team include: Kathryn Matos, Assistant City Manager Craig Clark, Director, Arts & Culture Gabrielle Favitta, Director, City Events Sheila Tyson, Marketing Coordinator Tiffany Marshall, Marketing & Outreach Manager Kelly Armstead, Manager of Cultural Arts Programs Dani Moschella, Public Information Officer Christopher Malave, Community Outreach Coordinator Steven Burdelski, Police Captain Together, along with the Heart of Boynton Community, we developed and carried out a very robust series of community events, performances, the repeal of three (3) Segregation Ordinances by City Commission, a Unity March and segregation ordinance burning and block party/luncheon, artist exhibitions, a mural project, a Unity Festival, Haitian Heritage Celebration, Unity Markers and more. The Heart of Boynton Neighborhood Association Planning Committee made the decision to postpone the need for the New Entry Feature to MLK Blvd., for now and focus more of bringing the Community together with Unity events and a Unity festival. A Call to Artist was also released to secure two artists to paint community murals in two locations in the Heart of Boynton. One mural was painted the south side of the racquetball court located in Sara Sims Park. The other 16 mural was painted on a building located on the corner of 1105 N. Federal Highway and MLK Blvd. The Heart of Boynton Neighborhood Association and community also voted to have two informational markers manufactured to be placed in the Heart of Boynton. The first marker is a historical marker that will be placed at the Greater St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church pending permitting. The other marker commemorates the important personal and professional accomplishments of two African-American citizens from the Heart of Boynton, Carolyn Sims and John Denson, both former Recreation Managers for the City. This marker has been placed near the Denson Pool.
