City staff is providing an informational update to the Art Advisory Board regarding the
current progress of the Public Art Master Plan. The project has successfully
transitioned from the initial data collection and community outreach phases into the
Mapping and Location Evaluation stage. This update outlines the work completed to
date and the technical steps currently underway to finalize the strategic framework
for the City's public art program.
Staff would like to provide an update to the Art Advisory Board regarding the status
of the Transforming Traffic Boxes into Public Art project . Following the Board's final
selection and scoring of 170 viable artist submissions, 35 winning art pieces were
identified to receive a $500 honorarium per design. The Board has successfully
completed the location assessment, assigning all 35 selected artworks to specific
intersections across various road jurisdictions, including City, County, and FDOT
territories. The project is now transitioning into the implementation phase, with the
first five installations currently moving into place.

Project Status Update: Public Art Master Plan Development and Mapping Phase.
Requested Action: City staff is providing an informational update to the Art Advisory Board
regarding the current progress of the Public Art Master Plan. The project has successfully
transitioned from the initial data collection and community outreach phases into the Mapping
and Location Evaluation stage. This update outlines the work completed to date and the
technical steps currently underway to finalize the strategic framework for the City's public art
program.
Explanation of Request:
The City has successfully completed the community engagement and data collection phase,
which identified a strong public desire for art that defines the city’s major corridors and the
public realm. Findings emphasized the creation of "art spines" and strategically placed
installations at key intersections to ensure high visibility for the public as they move through
streets and pedestrian paths. These results focus on strengthening the Arts and Cultural Hub
near the Cultural Center and the Heart of Boynton areas, utilizing Ocean Avenue as a primary
public art spine while expanding the program’s reach along Federal Highway and Congress
Avenue.
Building on these engagement findings, the project has transitioned into the mapping and
location evaluation stage. This phase involves identifying existing public art assets and
evaluating specific sites within these prioritized corridors based on planning considerations,
site conditions, and future development. These determinations are being developed into
mapping overlays that will be integrated into the final plan document to provide a technical
framework for the selection and placement of future artwork.
Staff is also coordinating the plan's direction with existing City programs, upcoming events,
and initiatives, such as the Kinetic event and various public art temporary installations. This
alignment ensures that the Master Plan supports a unified approach to the City’s arts
programming, allowing for a seamless transition between permanent outdoor installations and
temporary placements.

SKY REEF - Connection to the Ocean
Sky Reef is composed of three interconnected sculptural parasols,
each rising from the ground on organic, curving columns that arc
gracefully skyward. These structures merge seamlessly into a
continuous canopy, where structure and surface operate as one—
recalling the soft yet resilient frameworks of marine organisms. Their
interconnection creates a spatial field that is at once protective,
permeable, and open, inviting movement, gathering, and pause.
A vibrant chromatic gradient—drawn from the shifting hues of
underwater environments—animates the surface of the piece. By day,
the canopy refracts and filters sunlight, casting intricate patterns of
dappled color and shadow across the ground plane. By night,
integrated illumination transforms the sculpture into a luminous
beacon, extending its visual presence and reinforcing its identity as a
landmark within the urban fabric.
