Minutes 02-27-02City of Boynton Beach Library Advisory Board Minutes: February 27, 2002 Present: Board members: Marva Collins, Marion Grammer, Donna Harmening, Valerie Pleasanton, Herb Suss, Dorothy Walker Alternates: David Goudsward, Judy Sanders Library Director: Virginia Farace Absent: Dan Holthouse Chair Valerie Pleasanton called the meeting to order at 3:25. The minutes of the January 23rd meeting were adopted as distributed. Correspondence: None Chair's Report: Valerie attended a Marketing session at which participants were instructed to consider their customers' goals rather than their own. She suggested that we could apply that principal to the library's goals. Unfinished Business: Virginia gave an update on Palm Beach County's "Read Together" program. The book selected was Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451. The library has posters and bookmarks available for distribution. Virginia invited board members to take advantage of these. She also handed out copies of Boynton Beach's proclamation and invited board members to attend the formal adoption of the proclamation at the next City Commission meeting on Tuesday. The Friends of the Library are offering copies of the book for a $5 donation. A discussion of the book sponsored by the Library and the Boynton chapter of American Association of University Women (AAUW) will be held on March 16 at 1:00, and the African American Book Club will hold a discussion at their meeting on April 6. The board will set aside a portion of the March meeting for a discussion of the book. Virginia reported on a city managers/supervisors workshop on core values. She handed out the form that was sent to managers/supervisors asking for their input. A discussion followed of what the Board felt should be the guiding principles of the library. New Business: None Library Director's Report: Virginia met with state legislators in Tallahassee who all supported the state libraries' goals and grants. However, they admitted that funding these projects might be difficult in the current state's economic situation. A bill is pending to modify the Library Confidentiality Law to allow ~ibraries, for overdue purposes, to notify parents of what items their children have overdue. As of now, the Library Confidentiality Law prohibits the release of any personal library information to anyone other than the borrower. This change will assist libraries in the overdue notification process. (Library Records/Confidentiality; revises Provisions re confidentiality of public library registration & c rculat on records to authorize disclosure of information to parent or guardian of ibrary pat~ron under age 16, fOr purpose of collecting fines or recovering overdue books or other materials) Virginia will continue to monitor the state's legislative and budgeting process. The Friends' luncheon was well attended and successful. Announcements: Dorothy said that the free book distribution went well, and she provided some photos of this event. Commissioners Weiland, Fisher, Ferguson and McCray each donated $1000 toward the purchase of books for this event. The Board was appreciative of both Dorothy's work and the Commissioners' support. The Board was extremely pleased to hear that Mayor Broening has offered to contribute his entire discretionary fund of $12,500 to the library's book fund. The action is listed on next Tuesday's Commission agenda. The next meeting will be held on March 20, 2002, the third Wednesday, instead of the fourth Wednesday. Board members are asked to read Fahrenheit 451 which will be discussed at the March meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 4:35. Submitted by, Marion Grammer Adopted
