Mr. Lulkin stated that the Senior Center had just received two grants totaling approximately $100K. The City had given the Senior Center another $35K for the sprinkler systems that are required to meet the current Code. The Board members commented on the lovely tablecloths in the dining room that had been donated by a volunteer, Ms. Shirley Oaks. Everyone thought that these tablecloths had done a lot to make the place look really "homey" and inviting. They expressed their sincere thanks to Ms. Oaks. Vice Chair Field mentioned that she and Steve Lulkin had spoken to the Kiwanis Club (at the Kiwanis Club's request) about the Senior Center, and their talk was very well received. Mr. Lulkin indicated that the director of the Mae Volen Center had stated that she wished their center were more like the Boynton Beach Senior Center. Apparently, the Boynton Beach Senior Center is more active and has more participants than the Mae Volen Center. Everyone thought that this was remarkable since the Boynton Beach Senior Center had been in existence for three years compared to thirty years for the Mae Volen Center. Mri Lulkin remarked that during the month of June this year, dose to 9,000 people participated in the Center's programs, including lunches and all other activities. Mr. Lulkin mentioned that they were doing a Self-Assessment in preparation for application for accreditation. One of the things that had to be taken care of first was the installation of automatic doors at the entrance to the Center. The other issue with accreditation was having enough transportation for the facility. At the moment there is one bus available for the Center and it handles the shopping needs of the seniors, but the Center would like to be able to assist people with doctor's and dentist's visits also. Right now the one bus handles picking up and dropping off people at their homes, and the twice-weekly lunch trips. The Board asked Mr. Lulkin several questions about the lunch program. He stated that 118 people had been served lunch at the Center today. During season, there are between 150 and 200 people for lunch each day. The lunch is served from 11:15 a.m. through 12:15 p.m. To participate in the lunch program free-of-charge, one musts be sixty years of age or over. Although there is no fee for lunches in this category, donations are acceptedi There are no income requirements to participate in the lunch program. At one time there was a requirement based on financial need but the Area Agency on Aging decided that the social interaction for seniors was important and they changed the rule. ~[f a 2 Meeting Minutes Senior Advisory Board Boynton Beach, Florida November 4, 2002 person is age 55 to 60 and wants to have lunch, he or she must pay $2.35 for the lunch. They were concerned about people having to cross the street and decided to operate shuttle buses from the Center to the Woman's Club and back. Mr. Lulkin stated that the money that had just been received had to be used for the sprinkler systems and that the job was currently out for bids. He hoped that the work could start in .lanuary. Once the sprinkler system is in, they will start on the first part of the second phase which will have the Exercise Room, the new Computer Lab, and two offices in the first hallway to the back area. The pool table will be moved to the other side of the building and then they planned to put up partitions where the pool table is now and use the extra room for the Food program. Vice Chair Field stated that she and Mr. Lulkin had visited the Lake Worth Senior Center and discovered that they serve about 300 people a month. The Lake Worth Center is open to anyone in the County. Mr. Lulkin stated that the Boynton Beach Senior Center was a City facility but was also open to people from other areas. However, the Senior Center's bus only operates within the City limits. The Mae Volen Center bus operates from Boca Raton to Hypoluxo. The Board discussed the Wednesday lunch trips and how to sign up for them. Mr. Lulkin reported that after a Wednesday lunch trip, the sign-up sheet for the next week's trip is posted and people may sign up in person to reserve space on the next trip.
