January 6, 2003
Chairperson Hasty reported that the variety show was a success and donations
for the Senior Center Fund in the amount of $500 were received.
Tickets are available for the Thursday, January 23, 2003 variety show to be held
at the Woman's Club beginning at 1:00 p.m. The cost of the tickets is $7.00 and
funds raised will also go to the Senior Center Fund. There will be entertainment
and hors d'oeuvers. Mr. Lulkin also announced that there would be a band for
dancing, followed by the show and giveaways.
6. Old Business
Chairperson Hasty requested that Mr. Lulkin give an update on the sprinkler
situation at the Senior Center. Mr. Lulkin reported that the waterlines have been
located and the plans are being drawn up. Work should begin sometime in
March. It may be necessary to close the Senior Center at certain times during
the construction process. After the sprinklers are installed, the second phase of
the Senior Center can begin. This will include the exercise room, computer lab
and new office space. A hallway and door will also be built to add an entrance to
the stage room.
Mr. Lulkin also announced that the street in front of the Senior Center would be
made one-way heading west from Federal Highway. Diagonal handicap parking
will be added in front of the building. Mr. Lulkin said that he would be
recommending that no trucks be allowed because the road will be cut back due
to the diagonal parking. He also noted that automatic doors are going to be
added.
Mr. Lulkin reported that over $6,000 has been raised through the STARS
Program with a goal of $10,000.
Chairperson Hasty noted that she and Ms. Burbank would be going to St. John's
Missionary Baptist Church to try to recruit more minorities to participate in the
Senior Center activities. She will be contacting Reverend Chaney to make the
necessary arrangements. Jimmy Fedell, one of the City's bus drivers, also said
he would like to attend to discuss the bus services that are available to transport
people to the Senior Center. Ms. Chamberlain indicated that she would like to
attend as well. Chairperson Hasty will notify everyone that wants to attend after
she speaks with Reverend Chaney.
Ms. Chamberlain thought that it would be a good idea to contact all the senior
communities in the City to inform them about the Senior Center and the various
services that are available. Ms. Chamberlain also suggested that volunteers be
recruited to assist on the buses. Mr. Lulkin suggested that Ms. Burbank could
help with this.

7. New Business
Mr. Lulkin announced that the Mae Volin Center would like to open another food
site that would be located in the north end of the City, possibly at the Wilson
Center, since they are not meeting the minority requirements for the food
program at the Senior Center. Mr. Lulkin also noted that he has spoken with Mr.
Ellington at St. John's Missionary Baptist Church about offering various programs
and shows at the Church. Mr. Ellington will be bringing this before the Church
board for consideration.
Mr. Lulkin distributed a flyer furnished to him by Mr. Majors, the Recreation
Director, regarding the Ambassadors for Aging Day to be held in Tallahassee on
Thursday, March 6th. If there is enough interest, it may be possible to get a
group together to attend. In this event it would be necessary to go up the day
before since the program begins at 9:00 a.m. on March 6th. Anyone wishing to
attend should contact Mr. Lulkin who will check to see if there is money available
to make the trip. Mr. Lulkin noted that Lt. Governor Frank Brogan will be present
at the event.
Chairperson Hasty asked for an update on the accreditation for the Senior
Center. Mr. Lulkin announced that the next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday,
January 15th and there are approximately three chapters that need to be
completed. It is anticipated that the self-assessment would be completed by
June. After that, they will be able to apply for accreditation in August. There are
only two accredited senior centers in Florida and Boynton Beach is hoping to
become one of the top five senior centers in the State.
After everything is submitted, the Senior Center would be inspected over a period
of one to two days. If the center meets all the criteria, it would then become
accredited. The accreditation is good for three years and then you have to
reapply. If the Senior Center becomes accredited, the award is made in
Washington, D.C. Mr. Lulkin pointed out that they have been diligently working
on accreditation for over a year and one-half.
Ms. Wilson requested that flyers advertising the Senior Center be placed at St.
John's Missionary Baptist Church to let everyone know what the Senior Center
has to offer. Chairperson Hasty said that she would be bringing information with
her when she visits the Church.
Ms. Chamberlain thought that it was important that Boynton Beach have a
representative on the County's Board for the Area on Aging. She inquired when
the next leadership program would be offered since this is one of the criteria that
needs to be met in order to be appointed. Ms. Burbank thought that the program
was offered four times a year and suggested that Ms. Chamberlain try to sign up
