Minutes 12-11-02City of Boynton Beach Library Advisory Board Minutes: December 11, 2002 Present: Board members: Marion Grammer, Donna Harmening, Myra Jones, Valerie Pleasanton, Herb Suss. Library Director: Virginia Farace Absent: Marva Collins, Dan Holthouse. The meeting was called to order at 3:40 PM. The minutes of the December 11 meeting were adopted as distributed. Correspondence: Herb and Valerie sent letters to Governor Bush requesting that library budgets not be cut. Donna made a phone call with the same request. Chair's Report: Virginia, Donna and Herb attended the first anniversary celebration at the Schoolhouse Museum. Crystal paperweights were presented to major donors; the library received a paperweight, as city funding for the museum is done through the library budget. The paperweight will be displayed. Attendance for the museum's first year was double the anticipated number. Unfinished business: Virginia reported on the library's planned expansion. An RFQ for an architect has gone out, and decision should be made by February. A projected timeline was discussed which included the following: design and specifications to the State Library for review in July, and go out to bid in August. By Dec. 23, 2003, a contract must be signed for construction in order to qualify for the state library grant. The library's air conditioner unit must be replaced before the hot and humid weather arrives. Work is due to begin in January or February. New Business: none Public Audience: Marlene Nielsen was granted time to voice her objection to the library's raising fines for audio books from 5 cents to 50 cents. The library director and board president explained the reason for the decision and the process by which the new policy was put into place. Library Director's Report: Virginia handed out information on marketing strategies for libraries. One of the steps is getting information to the public, and the Friends have purchased advertising on Chamber of Commerce maps that are handed out to newcomers and sold at the C.C. office. Virginia handed out questions for board members to discuss in January regarding subjects that are relevant to marketing. Members agreed to submit their answers by Jan. 15, either in print or by e-mail (farace_v@firn.edu), so that a discussion can be held at the next meeting.
