Minutes: August 28, 2002
Present:

Absent: Herb Suss, David Goudsward
The meeting was called to order at 3:30 PM.
The Board welcomed Myra Jones as a new member. David Goudsward is no
longer eligible to serve on the Board as he has moved out of the city.
The minutes of the May 29 meeting were adopted as distributed.
Correspondence: None
Chair's Report: Valerie said that worn out American flags may be dropped off at
Ace Hardware to be properly disposed of on Sept. 11.
Unfinished business: Virginia handed out copies of the 2002-2003 library budget
and explained changes. There will be public hearings on Sept. 3 and Sept. 17 at
6:00 PM in the City Commission Chambers.
A motion was passed stating that the Board's recommendation to the City
Commission of May 29 (to approve the budget as presented and restore funds
for books and resources to $150,000) should stand as written.
Virginia handed out a comparative fines chart from other libraries in Palm
Beach County and noted that the Board's previous recommendations were in line
with other local libraries. A motion was passed that the Board accepts the fine
recommendations as follows: books @ 10 cents per day, audios and CDs @ 50
cents per day, and videos and DVDs @ $1.00 per day.
The Board reviewed the Library's revised Long Range Plan. A motion was
passed that the Board recommends to the City Commission that they approve
the Library's Long Range Plan for 2003-2005 as presented.
New Business: September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month and locally
this is PowerCard Month. Youth will be encouraged to sign-up for and/or use
their library card this month. Each time they do they will be entered into a
drawing for special giveaways with the grand prize of a backpack donated by
Office Depot. The library will add "lightning bolt" stickers to children's library
cards making them "PowerCards".
The Board agreed to change the start time of our meetings to 3:30 PM.
Announcements: Virginia reported that the library's annual book sale was held in
conjunction with the Gigantic Garage Sale at the Fairgrounds last weekend and
was very successful.
Dorothy announced that she is moving out of the city in September. Board
members expressed sincere regret that she will no longer be a member, thanked
her for her many years of service, and wished her well.
The next board meeting will be held on Sept. 25 at 3:30 PM.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:15.
