Minutes 12-18-03MINUTES OF THE ADVISORY BOARD ON CHILDREN AND YOUTH MEETING HELD IN THE ART CENTER, IN BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA, ON THURSDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2003 AT 7:00 P.M. Present Mary Morera, Vice Chair Evelyn Geathers Hattie Miller Steve Miller Lori Wilkinson Willie Pearl Wilson Phyllis Stern, Alternate Julie Claude, Student-Regular Voting Member Absent Sherri Claude, Board Liaison Steve Waldman, Chair I. Call to Order Vice Chair Morera opened the meeting at 7:00 p.m. and announced that she would act as Chair since Mr. Waldman was unable to attend. I1. Moment of Silent Prayer/Pledge of Allegiance The Board recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, followed by the observance of a silent prayer. II1. Approval of Minutes of November 13, 2003 Meeting Motion Ms. Wilkinson moved to approve the minutes of the November 13, 2003 meeting. Wilson seconded the motion that carried unanimously. IV. Approval of Agenda MS. Motion Mr. Miller moved to approve the agenda, seconded by Ms. Wilkinson, and carried unanimously. V. Announcements/Presentations/Correspondence Meeting Minutes Advisory Board on Children & Youth Boynton Beach, Florida December 19, 2003 Commissioner Ensler Donation Vice Chair Morera advised that she had received a $250 contribution from Commissioner Ensler. Commissioner Ensler's letter indicated that while he would leave it up to the Board to decide how to use the money, that he would be most pleased if it could be used either for a handicapped or a minority child. Everyone expressed appreciation for Commissioner Ensler's generosity. Ms. Claude will write a thank you letter to Commissioner Ensler, telling him that the Board will do its best to honor his wishes as they consider how to use the donation and that they will let him know when the Board has decided how to use the money. Boxtops for Education On behalf of the Youth Volunteer Bank, 232 boxtops were sent to Forest Park Elementary School for the Boxtops for Education program. These were collected by the youth members over the past year. Ms. Wilkinson commented that this was the equivalent of $23. The Advisory Board on Children & Youth sent 232 boxtops to Forest Park Elementary School for their Boxtops for Education program. Ms. Wilkinson commented that this was the equivalent of $23. Herita.qe Festival Vice Chair Morera advised that a letter had been received from Ms. Annette Gray of the Community Redevelopment Agency, asking for assistance via participation and/or sponsorships in the 21st Annual Heritage Festival in 2004. Ms. Gray's letter is on file in the City Clerk's office. The Board discussed offering a "float building" opportunity to the Youth Volunteer Bank and requested that Ms. Sherri Claude notify the YVB of a workshop meeting to discuss the float at the Library on January 17 at 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The Board decided to give a $75 sponsorship to the Heritage Festival in addition to the $25.00 float entry fee. Motion Ms. Stern moved that the Advisory Board on Children & Youth would participate in the Heritage Festival Parade by preparing a float and paying a $25.00 entry fee. The Board will also give a sponsorship award of $75.00 to the event. Ms. Julie Claude seconded the motion that carried unanimously. The suggestion was made to do a flier about the event also. Adopt-a-Spot The Board will take care of the Rolling Green Elementary School property for the Adopt- a-Spot project. Ms. Wilkinson stated that training would take place at the event. Ms. Stern asked if it would be appropriate to have an adult volunteer, and the consensus was that it would be great to have an adult to supervise. Ms. Sherri Claude reported that the dates would be January 24, May 1, August 7, and November 6. The May 1 date will be in conjunction with the Great American Cleanup. Information will go out to the Youth Volunteer Bank members in early January. B. Teen Center No developments. B. Teen Center No developments. C. Guest Speakers No developments. D. Youth Volunteer Bank Ms. Sherri Claude stated that the Youth Programs Supervisor would be organizing three different volunteer opportunities that the Board can promote for the children. The Holiday cards are being sent out to the YVB members. E. Bob Borovy Award Ms. Sherri Claude asked if everything was going to remain the same on the application. No one had any changes to suggest. Since there are no changes, Ms. Claude will forward the current application to the schools in January. F. Other Ms. Stern stated that Hunters Run had approved the Tennis Carnival, which is now set for April 10. This event will be added to the monthly agenda for the Board. 3 Meeting Minutes Advisory Board on Children & Youth Boynton Beach, Florida December ~.9, 2003 Ms. Wilkinson announced that she was teaching a sign language class at the Broward Community College and that her schedule for 2004 will cause her to miss three or more meetings. She asked to be kept on the mailing list for events and minutes. She definitely wants to continue her membership on the Board. VIII. New Business None IX, Future Meeting Dates: January 22, 2004 February 26, 2004 (location TBD) X.
