MEETING HELD IN THE ART CENTER

ON THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2004 AT 7:00 P.M.

I. Call to Order
Vice Chair Morera called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.
I1. Moment of Silent Prayer/Pledge of Allegiance
Ms. Morera led the Board in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag after which there was a
moment of silent reflection.
III. Approval of Minutes of January 22, 2004
Motion
Ms. Stern moved to approve the minutes. Mr. Miller seconded the motion that carried
unanimously.
IV. Approval of Agenda
Motion
Ms. Julie Claude moved to accept the agenda. Mr. Miller seconded the motion that carried
unanimously.
V. Announcements/Presentations/Correspondence
Ms. Sherri Claude presented a copy of a letter sent to the Mayor from Prudential Financial,
which was forwarded to the Board. It informed that a Boynton Beach area student is a finalist
in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, which is based on volunteer service. Ms.
Claude stated that since the student was not a City resident, she would not be eligible for the
Bob Borovy Award.

VII, Old Business
A, HeritageFest
Members discussed and finalized the details of their involvement in the HeritageFest parade
scheduled for February 28, 2004.
B. Adopt-A-Spot Program - January 24, May 1, August 7', November 6
Chair Waldman announced that the next date is May 1 at Rolling Green Park.
C. Youth Volunteer Bank (Banquet Date: May 22)
Chair Waldman announced that the banquet is scheduled for May 22 at the Civic Center. Ms.
Sherri Claude reported that the DJ has been booked, and that approximately five in-kind
donations have been received so far. She also requested that all members be responsible for
obtaining at least one donation (either cash or in-kind to be used as door prizes). Chair
Waldman said that he can get Torchio's and that Ms. Wilkinson usually gets East-West Karate.
D. Bob Borovy Award
Ms. Sherri Claude noted that she received one inquiry on this award; however, the student was
a non-resident, and therefore ineligible. She has sent packets to the local schools, and will
follow up with a fax to the guidance counselors. She also noted that she will send a sponsor
request letter to the American Legion. Ms. Julie Claude offered to distribute applications at
Boynton Beach High School.
£. Tennis Carnival- April 10 (Hunter's Run)
Vice Chair Morera noted that the flyers have been prepared. Ms. Sherri Claude will bring
some to next month's meeting, and will send Ms. Wilson some, as requested. Vice Chair
Morera will contact the Boynton Times to get the event advertised and possibly get a reporter
and/or photographer to come to the event.
F. Youth Expo (October 30) - theme suggestions?
Ms. Sherri Claude reported that an initial meeting has been held with staff where they received
a copy of last event's evaluation and decided on specific assignments.
Chair Waldman reminded the Board about the issue with the amount of savings bonds last
time. The staff committee, of which he was a part, decided on awards for the winners;
however, the Board voted to increase these amounts at one of the meetings. Ms. Sherri
Claude could not recall the exact amounts of the savings bonds issued, but felt that they were

too high. Chair Waldman felt that since the City, with the Board's approval, took responsibility
for the event several years ago, the Board should act in an advisory capacity and make
recommendations to staff. He also suggested trophies as an alternative to savings bonds for
contest winners.

H, Guest Speakers

I. Other
Chair Waldman announced that he has tentatively scheduled a tour of the African-American
Reference Library in Ft. Lauderdale for April 24 at 11:00 a.m. The tour can accommodate up
to 40 people, and Chair Waldman will need to confirm the number attending prior to the trip.
Ms. Sherri Claude will check to see if a City vehicle and driver are available that day. There
was discussion regarding how to get the word out, and to hopefully attract youth to attend.
Ms. Sherri Claude announced that a beautification project at Heritage Park was scheduled for
April 10 from 9:00 a.m. - noon. Postcards have been mailed to all Youth Volunteer Bank
Members.
Chair Waldman expressed desire to fill the vacant student board member openings. Ms.
Geathers noted that one of the students who attended last month's meeting informed her she
turned in an application. Ms. Sherri Claude will double-check with the Clerk's office to see if
any have been received.
