Minutes: January 28, 2004

The meeting was called to order at 3:35 PM by Chairperson Valede Pleasanton.
Valede introduced Assistant City Attorney Mike Pawelczyk who explained the
Sunshine Law as it applies to Board members. He also defined Public Records
and discussed Ethics as they pertain to Board members. He left at 4:05 and the
regular agenda was resumed.
The Chair acknowledged the arrival of Mr Heffeman at 3:55 PM.
The minutes of the December 17, 2003 meeting were approved as mailed.
Correspondence: The Director received a letter from the State Librarian
regarding our construction grant defaulting back to the State since a contract was
not executed by the City Commission to meet the December 23, 2003 deadline.
Virginia read her response which indicated that the city would be resubmitting for
a future construction grant.
Unfinished Business: Virginia reported that at their first meeting of 2004, the City
Commission formally decided to go forward with the library expansion project. At
the second commission meeting in January, the City Manager was authorized to
start the process of issuing a revenue bond to supplement the ClP fund to pay for
the library expansion and the other projects approved by the commission.
The Board expressed their appreciation to the City Commission for its support of
the library construction project.
Valede had to leave at 4:25 and Sean Fenton took over the duties of Chair.
Library Director's Report: Virginia announced that the following employees have
accepted the city's early retirement offer and will be leaving this year on the
dates listed: Joyce Waters (Apdl 30), Grace Ramos (July 31), Bill Coup, Kathy
Keaney, and Susanne Berman (Sept 30). Everyone expressed their
appreciation to these employees who will be deeply missed. Virginia reminded
the Board that the Administrative Secretary position is still filled by a "temp" while
awaiting approval from the City Manager to start the hidng process. Every
position is critically needed but finding qualified replacements will be difficult and
time-consuming.
Virginia explained that February is Library Appreciation Month. The City
Commission will be issuing a proclamation and both the Advisory Board Chair
and the Fdends President will be at the meeting to accept. Other in-house
activities were described with everyone asked to participate all month long in
"Love Your Library...A Place for All Reasons".
Announcements:
The Friends Luncheon will be on Monday, Feb. 16 at Benvenuto Restaurant with
Author Jilliane Hoffman. Reservations are still available.
HeritageFest is being celebrated throughout the city during the month of
February and there will be special events at the Library on Saturday, Feb. 7,
including guest author/actor Tommy Ford.
The Boynton Beach Little League National Championship Team will host
representatives from the big league World Series Champion Florida Marlins on
Monday, Feb. 2, from 4:30 to 5:30 PM, outside the Schoolhouse Children's
Museum.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 3:30 PM.
