Minutes 05-10-04MINUTES OF THE SAFETY COMMITTEE MEETING HELD IN THE FIRE/POLICE TRAINING ROOM, CITY HALL, BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA ON MONDAY, MAY 10, 2004 AT 10:00 A.M. Call to Order Chairman Balfe called the meeting to order at 10:05 a.m. Division Chief Valentine introduced Rodger Kemmer the new Deputy Chief of Fire Life Safety. Members welcomed back Brenda LeVant who has been out on sick leave. II. Roll Call The Secretary called the roll and declared a quorum was present. III. Acceptance of Minutes of April 12, 2004 Regular Meeting There were no changes to the minutes. Meeting Minutes Safety Committee Meeting Boynton Beach, Florida May 10, 2004 Motion Bill Coup moved to accept the minutes. Motion seconded by Mark Bobich and unanimously carried. IV. Safety Committee Education and Training Program A. Video Members viewed a video entitled Unsafe Acts - Human Behavior V. Old Business A. Fire Drills Division Chief Valentine reported that he has spoken to Deputy Chief Kemmer regarding fire drills. Division Chief Valentine felt that Deputy Chief Kemmer would be able to advise the Committee on how often fire drills should be held. Deputy Chief Kemmer requested that he be given an opportunity to develop criteria for fire drills and to make recommendations, which he would bring back to the Committee for consideration. Mr. Mitchell requested that when fire drills are held, that employees be forced to use alternative exits instead of using the main entrances. He pointed out that this would be beneficial for employees to acquaint themselves with the secondary exists in the various buildings. Deputy Chief Kemmer stated that this could be done by placing cones in front of the main exists. Division Chief Valentine recommended that if there was a video on fire drills that it could be shown in the various departments so that employees would know what they are supposed to do during a drill. Ms. LeVant reported that during fire drills, dispatch does not evacuate the building. However, in the event of a real emergency, when everyone must leave the building, including dispatch, they are trained to evacuate and set up their operations out of the building. Chairman Balfe recommended that he and Mr. Magazine meet with Deputy Chief Kemmer to come up with a plan of action. B. "Proud to be a Safe Worker" Awards None C. Defensive Driver Course Ms. Webb reported that staff is still working on getting the program working. Because of a problem with another program administered by Risk Management, implementation of the defensive driver course has been pushed back. Ms. Webb anticipates that it should be on line by the end of the summer. None VI. None E. Incident Review Board Referrals New Business A. "Departmental Safety Issues" B. Other Division Chief Valentine stated that the June meeting would be his last meeting since he would be retiring from the City. As soon as he learns who his replacement will be on the Safety Committee he will inform Chairman Balfe. VII. Announcements VIII. Next Meeting Date: Monday, June 14, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. IX.
