A. Fire Drills
Division Chief Valentine reported that he has spoken to Deputy Chief Kemmer
regarding fire drills. Division Chief Valentine felt that Deputy Chief Kemmer would be
able to advise the Committee on how often fire drills should be held. Deputy Chief
Kemmer requested that he be given an opportunity to develop criteria for fire drills and
to make recommendations, which he would bring back to the Committee for
consideration.
Mr. Mitchell requested that when fire drills are held, that employees be forced to use
alternative exits instead of using the main entrances. He pointed out that this would be
beneficial for employees to acquaint themselves with the secondary exists in the various
buildings. Deputy Chief Kemmer stated that this could be done by placing cones in front
of the main exists.
Division Chief Valentine recommended that if there was a video on fire drills that it could
be shown in the various departments so that employees would know what they are
supposed to do during a drill.
Ms. LeVant reported that during fire drills, dispatch does not evacuate the building.
However, in the event of a real emergency, when everyone must leave the building,
including dispatch, they are trained to evacuate and set up their operations out of the
building. Chairman Balfe recommended that he and Mr. Magazine meet with Deputy
Chief Kemmer to come up with a plan of action.
