Minutes 06-03-04Advisory Board on Children and Youth Teen Center Workshop June 3, 2004 -- 4:30pm -- Library Conference Room Present: Alyssa Ewing, Courtney Wilder(teen), Steve Waldman, Harriet Lerman (running for county commissioner), Lori Wilkinson, Mary Morera (taking minutes) Steve asked if Alyssa Ewing could run the meeting to get a teen's perspective on the issue. Alyssa said that many teens are motivated by the opportunity to complete their community service hours. All students must complete volunteer hours and working on a teen center would be a good opportunity to earn these hours. Harriet said she had been involved with a student group who formed a mock legislature. She also suggested that we need a mission statement. Steve wondered about how to name the group (i.e. what would have more appeal, a teen council or a youth council?). We had a short discussion about why our previous youth council worked for a while but could not sustain membership after certain graduating seniors left. It was suggested to get more middle school students involved who will be around longer. Lori Wilkinson suggested that we form a committee solely for the purpose of creating a teen center. This group would be very focused on this task and could motivate students to get involved. We could call it the Teen Center Committee. Steve proposed that we form a team of 2-3 people to approach schools and ask the principals to recommend a couple of key students to be a part of the committee. We plan to set a date for the kick off at our next advisory board meeting. All agreed that September would be a good goal. Steve will reserve the Civic Center. Mary will work on the flyer. We need our mission, purpose, date, time, to be determined.
