Minutes 04-12-04Advisory Board on Children and Youth Teen Center Workshop April 12, 2004 -- 4pm -- Library Conference Room Present: Commissioner McKoy, Alyssa Ewing, Betsy Veancr, Steve Waldman, Beth Kranc (Sun Sentinel), Mary Morera (taking minutes) Question posed: What do we want as a Teen Center? Ideas expressed: Computer Access / Intemet, Homework Area, Place to hang out, Place to go to stay out of trouble that is cheerful and warm, Tutoring program. Commissioner McKoy suggested that we need a Youth Advisory Council. The teens need to be an integral part of the decision making process and the design of the center. He said the most important thing is to get buy-in from the city and that the city needs a strong partnership with the community schools. All agreed that we should start with a "pool of teens" i.e. draw from active student clubs such as student government, glee clubs, athletic clubs, and churches. We need a kick off meeting inviting these key teens to attend. Start by approaching all Boynton Schools individually. List of schools: Congress Middle, Christa McAuliffe, St. Joseph, Santaluces, Odyssey, Boynton HS, Atlantic HS, Survivors Charter, Lake Worth Christian. Possible sites for the teen center that were brought up included a 2nd story on the Civic Center or the old high school building across the street. Mary will work on a flyer for the kick off. It should be colorful and ask for teens ideas on the center. Need to set a date.
