Discussion ensued regarding a letter from the Boynton Beach Recreation Department
granting permission to the Advisory Board on Children and Youth to use the Civic
Center Facility for their upcoming meeting on September 9, 2004 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00
p.m. All fees have been waived. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the Teen
Center and get youth involved.
Sherrie Claude, Board Liaison circulated some photos from previous years' events that
the board would like to keep for historical purposes.
Chair Waldman noted that he invited Lulu Butler of Delray Beach for the July 22, 2004
meeting but apparently she was not able to make it. He would extend another invitation
to her. Chair Waldman said Ms. Butler is an award-wining employee in Delray Beach
who has done tremendous work with the Youth Council and Teen Center. He would like
to get her feedback.
VII. Old Business
E. Bowling Tournament (July 25)
Chair Waldman announced that the bowling tournament is scheduled for July 25, 2004
at 1:30 p.m. Ms. Claude said eight people have registered and she has blank
certificates for the children. Ms. Claude also noted that The Palm Beach Post, Boynton
Times and the Sun-Sentinel would be present. The Sun-Sentinel would have a
photographer and a reporter present. Discussion continued regarding trophy awards,
registration details and concession information. Tickets are on sale for $20 per person
and all the proceeds will go to the Bob Borovy Award.
B Volunteer Project/Adopt-A-Spot Program (August 7,November 6)
Chair Miller noted that they have adopted a spot near Rolling Green Elementary School
at 26th Street. The next scheduled time to adopt-a-spot would be Saturday August 7,
2004, at 9:00 a.m. Ms. Veaner said that she inspected the area to see how it was doing
and noticed that the Iow line ferns were dead and need replacing, but she does not
recommend replacing them until water was provided in the area. She recommended
getting the group together to prune and rake the spot.
VI. Public Audience
Chair Waldman welcomed Ms. Harriet Lerman, who was in the audience. Ms. Lerman,
resident of Boynton Beach and owner of an Early Learning Center in Delray Beach,
provided some background information about herself. She talked about a television
show that she has produced and moderated in the past. With special thought and the
children in mind, Ms. Lerman said she would like to produce and moderate a television

show in Boynton Beach giving the children an opportunity to produce, moderate and
star in their own television show. She provided an overview of her projection for the
show. Ms. Lerman said the program would give young people self-confidence, self-
esteem, and an opportunity to become a star in the field of leadership and athletics.
This program would be geared for middle school and high school students. She pointed
out that she would like to have the Advisory Board on Children and Youth input and
involvement.
Discussion ensued regarding whether this was exclusively for citizens of Boynton Beach
or Palm Beach County, whether it was open to elementary schools or private schools
and whether children would have an opportunity to participate in "behind the scene"
production.
Chair Miller suggested putting this information on the City's website. It was also
suggested that they use the schools' network for publication. Vice Chair Morera said
she supported the idea; however, the board has lots of planned projects and was
unable to make a commitment. She asked for more specifics from Ms. Lerman in
regard to what role the board would play, and whether she would be receiving
sponsorship from a television station or radio station. The board was in consensus that
the vision was great but the focus was on a teen center; therefore, they suggested she
plan a meeting and invite the board.
Consensus
There was a general consensus from the board to support the idea.
Ms. Lerman pointed out that in order for this vision to be successful it would need lots of
help including school principals' input, volunteers, sponsorship and brainstorming.
A. Teen Center
Vice Chair Morera went over the flyer for the grand opening of the Teen Center and
asked for suggestions before publication. Ms. Claude suggested Vice Chair Morera e-
mail her the flyer and she would print it on colored paper. It was suggested that they
distribute the flyers at the Civic Center, Wilson Center, churches, youth groups and
libraries. The week of August 23, 2004 was targeted to attend schools to talk to
principals and guidance counselors about the Teen Center and announcing it on the
morning announcement. The board members picked a territory that they would attend.
Discussion continued regarding the agenda for the first meeting, refreshments, activities
and schedule.
C. Youth Volunteer Bank
Chairman Waldman asked for ideas on getting more youth to participate in this
endeavor. Ms. Claude suggested sending an invitation to the youth that are already in

the program. She suggested scheduling a meeting for early October and getting the
youth to socialize and brainstorm. It is important to know what sort of activities they are
already involved in and what they would like the board to do to make it a more
rewarding program.
D. Bob Borovy Award
Ms. Claude announced that the Bob Borovy Award budget balance is currently $2,201.
F. Youth Expo (October 30)
Ms. Claude provided an update on the event that is scheduled for October 30, 2004 in
