Minutes 07-22-04MINUTES OF THE ADVISORY BOARD ON CHILDREN & YOUTH MEETING HELD IN THE COMMISSION CHAMBERS, CITY HALL, BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA, ON THURSDAY, July 22, 2004 AT 7:00 P.M. Call to Order Sherri Claude, Board Liaison unanimously carried. IV. Approval of Agenda Motion Ms. Veaner moved to unanimously carried. approve the agenda. Motion seconded by Mr. Miller and Chairman Waldman called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. I1. Pledge of Allegiance/Moment of Silent Prayer Ms. Betsy Veaner led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, followed by a moment of silent prayer. II1. Approval of Minutes of June 24, 2004 Motion Mr. Miller moved to approve the minutes. Motion seconded by Ms. Roberts and Meeting Minutes Advisory Board on Children and Youth Boynton Beach, Florida July 22, 2004 V. Announcements/Presentations/Correspondence Discussion ensued regarding a letter from the Boynton Beach Recreation Department granting permission to the Advisory Board on Children and Youth to use the Civic Center Facility for their upcoming meeting on September 9, 2004 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. All fees have been waived. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the Teen Center and get youth involved. Sherrie Claude, Board Liaison circulated some photos from previous years' events that the board would like to keep for historical purposes. Chair Waldman noted that he invited Lulu Butler of Delray Beach for the July 22, 2004 meeting but apparently she was not able to make it. He would extend another invitation to her. Chair Waldman said Ms. Butler is an award-wining employee in Delray Beach who has done tremendous work with the Youth Council and Teen Center. He would like to get her feedback. VII. Old Business E. Bowling Tournament (July 25) Chair Waldman announced that the bowling tournament is scheduled for July 25, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. Ms. Claude said eight people have registered and she has blank certificates for the children. Ms. Claude also noted that The Palm Beach Post, Boynton Times and the Sun-Sentinel would be present. The Sun-Sentinel would have a photographer and a reporter present. Discussion continued regarding trophy awards, registration details and concession information. Tickets are on sale for $20 per person and all the proceeds will go to the Bob Borovy Award. B Volunteer Project/Adopt-A-Spot Program (August 7,November 6) Chair Miller noted that they have adopted a spot near Rolling Green Elementary School at 26th Street. The next scheduled time to adopt-a-spot would be Saturday August 7, 2004, at 9:00 a.m. Ms. Veaner said that she inspected the area to see how it was doing and noticed that the Iow line ferns were dead and need replacing, but she does not recommend replacing them until water was provided in the area. She recommended getting the group together to prune and rake the spot. VI. Public Audience Chair Waldman welcomed Ms. Harriet Lerman, who was in the audience. Ms. Lerman, resident of Boynton Beach and owner of an Early Learning Center in Delray Beach, provided some background information about herself. She talked about a television show that she has produced and moderated in the past. With special thought and the children in mind, Ms. Lerman said she would like to produce and moderate a television Meeting Minutes Advisory Board on Children and Youth Boynton Beach, Florida July 22, 2004 show in Boynton Beach giving the children an opportunity to produce, moderate and star in their own television show. She provided an overview of her projection for the show. Ms. Lerman said the program would give young people self-confidence, self- esteem, and an opportunity to become a star in the field of leadership and athletics. This program would be geared for middle school and high school students. She pointed out that she would like to have the Advisory Board on Children and Youth input and involvement. Discussion ensued regarding whether this was exclusively for citizens of Boynton Beach or Palm Beach County, whether it was open to elementary schools or private schools and whether children would have an opportunity to participate in "behind the scene" production. Chair Miller suggested putting this information on the City's website. It was also suggested that they use the schools' network for publication. Vice Chair Morera said she supported the idea; however, the board has lots of planned projects and was unable to make a commitment. She asked for more specifics from Ms. Lerman in regard to what role the board would play, and whether she would be receiving sponsorship from a television station or radio station. The board was in consensus that the vision was great but the focus was on a teen center; therefore, they suggested she plan a meeting and invite the board. Consensus There was a general consensus from the board to support the idea. Ms. Lerman pointed out that in order for this vision to be successful it would need lots of help including school principals' input, volunteers, sponsorship and brainstorming. A. Teen Center Vice Chair Morera went over the flyer for the grand opening of the Teen Center and asked for suggestions before publication. Ms. Claude suggested Vice Chair Morera e- mail her the flyer and she would print it on colored paper. It was suggested that they distribute the flyers at the Civic Center, Wilson Center, churches, youth groups and libraries. The week of August 23, 2004 was targeted to attend schools to talk to principals and guidance counselors about the Teen Center and announcing it on the morning announcement. The board members picked a territory that they would attend. Discussion continued regarding the agenda for the first meeting, refreshments, activities and schedule. C. Youth Volunteer Bank Chairman Waldman asked for ideas on getting more youth to participate in this endeavor. Ms. Claude suggested sending an invitation to the youth that are already in Meeting Minutes Advisory Board on Children and Youth Boynton Beach, Florida July 22, 2004 the program. She suggested scheduling a meeting for early October and getting the youth to socialize and brainstorm. It is important to know what sort of activities they are already involved in and what they would like the board to do to make it a more rewarding program. D. Bob Borovy Award Ms. Claude announced that the Bob Borovy Award budget balance is currently $2,201. F. Youth Expo (October 30) Ms. Claude provided an update on the event that is scheduled for October 30, 2004 in regard to the invitation, location, entertainment and a writing contest. She said they have $800 cash sponsorship from The Palm Beach Post. G. Guest Speakers -None H. Other VIII. New Business A. November meeting date Discussion continued on combining the November and December meetings. Members were in consensus to have the meeting on December 2, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. IX. Future Meeting Dates: X.
