Minutes 09-12-07 MINUTES OF THE VETERANS ADVISORY COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING HELD ON WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12,2007 @ 10:00 A.M. CITY HALL, CONFERENCE ROOM B, BOYNTON BEACH. FLORIDA Present: Tom Kaiser, Chair Robert Zimmerman Morris Boruck Karl Washington Chuck Magazine, Board Liaison Absent: David Buckner Lester McKinzie Stanley Gavlick, Alternate Stuart Preston, Alternate I. Call to Order Chair Kaiser called the meeting to order at 10:14 a.m. II. Pledge of Allegiance The members recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. III. Invocation Chair Kaiser gave the invocation. IV. Roll Call of Members The Recording Secretary called the roll and declared a quorum was present. V. Agenda Approval Motion Mr. Zimmerman moved to approve the agenda. Mr. Boruck seconded the motion that unanimously passed. Meeting Minutes Veterans Advisory Commission Boynton Beach, Florida September 12, 2007 VI. Approval of Minutes There was an addition to the minutes of April 11, 2007 which was to note Mr. Boruck as present. Motion Mr. Zimmerman moved approval of the minutes of April 11, 2007 and April 18, 2007. Mr. Boruck seconded the motion that unanimously passed. VII. Comments by Chair Chair Kaiser read a letter from the City dated August 31, 2007 indicating they accepted the proposal from the Veterans Council for the Veterans Monument which will be at Bicentennial Park. It was intended the monument would be the focal point of the park. The project was in the planning stages and being worked on by the Recreation and Parks Department. Ms. Rivers would be leading the effort. The City thanked the Veterans for their generous contribution of time and money. Mr. Magazine will contact Ms. Rivers and forward information so she could contact the Veterans Advisory Board about the project. The project was being undertaken by the Veterans Council not the Veterans Advisory Commission. There was discussion the Veterans Council needed to coordinate with the Recreation and Parks Department, their consultants, as well as the Veterans Advisory Commission. The location within the park for the monument needed to be determined and what would be moved from Intracoastal Park to the new location would be discussed with the Recreation and Parks Department. VIII. Comments from Visitors None. IX. Old Business Mr. Boruck announced the Post 440, Jewish War Veterans donated funds in the amount of $410 for 10 tickets to a football game at the stadium in Miami. The only veterans being solicited to attend were current veterans and Veterans from the Persian Gulf. Chair Kaiser advised they would look for veterans to attend as a guest of the Jewish War Veterans. 2 Meeting Minutes Veterans Advisory Commission Boynton Beach, Florida September 12, 2007 X. New Business A. Veterans Day, November 11, 2007, Intracoastal Park Chair Kaiser announced the above event will take place at 2:00 p.m. Additionally, participants will gather after the event at the VFW across the street. They were looking for a speaker for the event. Mr. Magazine offered to contact the local congressman as a guest speaker. Chair Kaiser will develop a flyer and forward it to Mr. Magazine. There will be a Veterans Advisory Commission meeting, November 14, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. B. Four Chaplains Day Sunday, February 3, 2008, Location: TBA Four Chaplains Day will be held February 3rd at 2:00 p.m. Chair Kaiser announced the event would be discussed further at the January meeting, and the location of the event was tentatively set for St. Joseph Episcopal Church. Chair Kaiser will send out a newsletter detailing the upcoming events. Chair Kaiser was very disappointed about low attendance and suggested the members be contacted about it. There was discussion about the Ordinance and removing members for cause. Mr. Magazine recommended the Veterans Advisory Commission recommend to the City Commission a member be removed after three meetings. Chair Kaiser noted the Veterans Advisory Commission had a regular member and an alternate position open. One position was allowed from outside the City and as was one alternate. He encouraged members to solicit participation and fill the vacancies. He announced for the record he was disturbed about the lack of attendance at the meeting. XI. Benediction, Moment of Silent Prayer Chair Kaiser gave the benediction and the committee observed a moment of silence. XII.
