On that topic, Mr. Magazine announced the City was recognized statewide as a model
and was receiving an award for its safety newsletter. He announced if there was a
specific issue an employee needed to learn how to handle, to let them know. They had
resources and if they did not have material on it, they would get it.
V. Old Business
A. Fire Drills
Mr. Altman spoke with Mr. Macintyre about fire drills and noted Recreation and Parks
was outstanding as far as fire drills were concerned. The Fire Department also
conducted fire drills. The Library was opening March 24, 2008. Mr. Magazine
suggested holding at least one fire drill in the Library within the first 90 days.
Additionally, Mr. Magazine reported they put the plastic covers over the fire alarm pull
stations in the City Hall Lobby to prevent false alarms. The covers were suggested for
the Library as well and Ms. Rivers would look into the covers.
B. Proud to be a Safe Worker Awards
Mr. Magazine explained they were trying to recognize employees who go out of their
way and do something really safe that has an impact on people. Several months ago
they scheduled a safe workers award for two people before the City Commission. One
employee showed and one did not. Mr. Magazine expressed his disappointment that
they are really trying to honor an individual and recognize the actions they had taken by
bringing them to the City Commission. The Mayor personally presents the award, and
pictures are taken.
In the future, Safety Award recipients would receive pins but staff will not issue
certificates unless the recipients attend the presentation at the City Commission
meetings.
There was discussion some employees may not want to go home, shower and come
back to the meeting during the dinner hour. Mr. Magazine explained it was frustrating
when they have to pull the awards off the agenda. Mr. Magazine advised they will still
make the effort and noted the City Manager and the Mayor love these recognitions.
C. Departmental Inspections & Safety Meetings
Mr. Magazine advised the Departmental Inspection information is on the shared drive.
He asked members to review the information to ensure it was correct. Chair Bobich has
been following up on issues and conducting inspections as a supplement. He explained
one way to keep an area safe was to routinely inspect areas.
Chair Bobich has also been reading the inspection reports. He found an item at the
Intracoastal Park based on a report submitted. Mr. Magazine emphasized when a form

is submitted, it would be followed up.
D. Defensive Driver Course
1. Solid Waste drivers, special class (not yet requested)
The Defensive Driver classes were still ongoing and Risk Management was trying to
schedule a special class for Public Works employees. Many firemen have also taken
the class.
Mr. Altman would be speaking to Mr. Bobich and Pam Brown to get the entire
department on one schedule. Mr. Magazine advised they will schedule classes even if
they were after hours.
E. Incident Review Board Referrals
None.
F. Smoking Cessation Classes - Human Resources
This class was ongoing and notice of the class was given by information included with
the paychecks. Anyone interested in the class should contact Human Resources.
Chair Bobich advised many insurance companies are now covering stop smoking aids.
G. Near Miss Accident Reporting System - Fire (Altman)
This item would be discussed at the next meeting.
H. Other
None.
VI. New Business
A. Departmental Safety Issues
None.
B. Fire Alarm System in City Hall Complex - Status
Chair Bobich explained testing was done at the City Hall complex last week and he met
with Roger Kemmer of the Fire Department to review what was needed to upgrade City
facilities. They will meet again in about two or three weeks to review facilities and make
improvements. They may have to go out for bid, but they were hoping for repairs
instead. Mr. Magazine advised the equipment is old and upgrades were for the fire

alarm only. Ms. Rivers noted every time they have a fire drill, many people do not leave
the building.
C. Safety Council Awards Luncheon - March 13, 2008
Mr. Magazine advised there were still a few seats left for the Safety Council Awards
Luncheon on Thursday, and invited the members to attend. A reminder notice was sent
for the luncheon and auction which served as a fund raiser for the Safety Council. He
also informed the members the City will be receiving awards, and was the only City that
regularly had at least one Commissioner present at the luncheon. This year
Commissioner Ross will attend.
D. Other
Mr. Magazine advised he was still working on the safety manual and apologized for the
delay. They may have a special meeting to review it; however, no formal decision was
made to do so.
VII. Announcements
Mr. Magazine thanked the members who regularly attend the safety meetings and
advised departments would be notified regarding members that do not.
VIII. Next Meeting Date: Monday, April 14, 2008, 10:00 a.m.
