Minutes 05-05-08 MINUTES OF THE SENIOR ADVISORY BOARD REGULAR MEETING HELD ON MAY 5, 2008 AT 3:00 P.M. AT THE SENIOR CENTER, BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA Present: Bernice Begleitger Lillian Bruzzese Susan Collins Elizabeth Jenkins Rose A. Love Betty Spinelli Virginia O'Connell, Alternate Steve Lu/kin, City Liaison Absent: Denise Chamberlain, Chair I. Call to Order Susan Collins, Acting Chair, called the meeting to order at 3:07 p.m., noting that Chair Chamberlain was in China making a presentation at the Senior Center. II. Pledge of Allegiance The board recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. III. Roll Call The Recording Secretary called the roll. V. Approval of Minutes Motion Ms. Spinelli moved approval. Ms. Bruzzese seconded the motion that passed unanimously. VI. Chairperson's Remarks - Substitute - Alternates Acting Chair Collins believed Chair Chamberlain would probably be in China for at least 20 days. Ms. O'Connell arrived at 3:09 p.m. Meeting Minutes Senior Advisory Board Boynton Beach, Florida May 5, 2008 Acting Chair Collins noted a vacancy still existed on the board for an Alternate position. Ms. O'Connell advised a gentlemen in her complex had spoken with Chair Chamberlain and would be submitting an application. VII. Old Business A. Timeline for Instituting Community for a Lifetime · Approval received on 3/18/08 from City Commission · Meeting with representative from Community for a Lifetime- Janine Rogers · Update on State Grant - Steve Lulkin Steve Lulkin, Recreation Supervisor, noted Boynton Beach was in the process of becoming a Communities for a Lifetime City. A survey would be undertaken assessing the needs of the City, after which a committee would be formed to establish action plans. The intent of the initiative was to attract residents to Boynton Beach. The survey would determine whether the City had sufficient hospita/s, schoo/s, churches and shopping. The Communities for a Lifetime initiative would be established not only for seniors but for people of all ages. The Senior Advisory Board would take the lead on this initiative and the committee assembled would be comprised of individuals and organizations in the community. Mr. Lulkin and Wally Majors, Recreation & Parks Director, met with Janine Harris Rogers, Director of Community Relations for Communities for a Lifetime, who offered to support the board in its efforts. Mr. Lulkin would be meeting on Wednesday with Mr. Majors and Carisse LeJeune, from the City Manager's Office, and would be determining a timeline. Once the committee had been established, City staff would be available to assist. Mr. Lulkin would serve as the liaison. The process could take several years and there was no immediate deadline. In addition to the City of Boynton Beach, the initiative would include services provided to Boynton Beach in surrounding areas. To date, 173 cities had become Communities for a Lifetime. The initiative would provide additional pOints, and would assist in applying for the State Grant. A brochure, or b/ueprint, for Communities for a Lifetime was provided, a copy of which is on file in the City Clerk's Office. The Senior Volunteer Dinner was held at the Intracoastal Park C/ubhouse, one of the City's new facilities. The Carolyn Sims Center was another new facility which included the Denson Pool. A swim program would be available to seniors. With regard to the State Grant from the Department of Elder Affairs, a Letter of Intent was prepared and transmitted. Mr. Lulkin and Paula LeBlanc, Facilities Director, were putting bids together and upon a response to the Letter of Intent, the bids would be presented to the City Commission, probably in June 2008. The items included a new awning for the rear of the building, awning replacement for the front, hurricane-rated shutters, a new air-conditioner, six new surveillance cameras, a public address system, an automatic toilet-flushing system and automatic door openers for handicap bathrooms, at a total cost of $71/497. The Senior Center in Boynton Beach was one of 12 centers receiving the grant. Most cities were required to provide 25% in matching funds; however, as the City was in the process of installing a new roof, the roof served as the City's match. VIII. New Business A. Result of meeting with Representative - Janine Rogers and Wally majors This was discussed above. B. Discussion of steps to be taken on timeline This was discussed above. C. Senior Center Report - Steve Lulkin Eighty-three people attended today's luncheon at the Senior Center, while 98 attended last Thursday. The Center was still averaging 200 individuals per day during off season. People continued to enroll in classes, with 48 individuals having participated in chair exercises this date. Enrollment for computer classes continued at a respectable rate. Approximately 1/070 had registered at the Center since October. Saturday programs previously held were discontinued by the Health Department, as there were no cooking facilities at the Center. The Parenting/Grandparenting group met at the Center one Saturday per month. The Mothers' Day Show and Ice Cream Social would be presented this Thursday at 1:00 p.m. There would be entertainment by singer Eddie Michaels and door prizes. Roses would be provided to all mothers. The cost of the event was covered by sponsorships and to date, 178 tickets had been provided. Acting Chair Collins requested Items to be placed on the agenda for the next meeting.
