· Approval received on 3/18/08 from City Commission
· Meeting with representative from Community for a Lifetime- Janine
Rogers
· Update on State Grant - Steve Lulkin
Steve Lulkin, Recreation Supervisor, noted Boynton Beach was in the process of
becoming a Communities for a Lifetime City. A survey would be undertaken assessing
the needs of the City, after which a committee would be formed to establish action
plans. The intent of the initiative was to attract residents to Boynton Beach. The
survey would determine whether the City had sufficient hospita/s, schoo/s, churches and
shopping. The Communities for a Lifetime initiative would be established not only for
seniors but for people of all ages. The Senior Advisory Board would take the lead on
this initiative and the committee assembled would be comprised of individuals and
organizations in the community. Mr. Lulkin and Wally Majors, Recreation & Parks
Director, met with Janine Harris Rogers, Director of Community Relations for
Communities for a Lifetime, who offered to support the board in its efforts. Mr. Lulkin
would be meeting on Wednesday with Mr. Majors and Carisse LeJeune, from the City
Manager's Office, and would be determining a timeline. Once the committee had been
established, City staff would be available to assist. Mr. Lulkin would serve as the
liaison. The process could take several years and there was no immediate deadline. In
addition to the City of Boynton Beach, the initiative would include services provided to
Boynton Beach in surrounding areas. To date, 173 cities had become Communities for
a Lifetime. The initiative would provide additional pOints, and would assist in applying
for the State Grant. A brochure, or b/ueprint, for Communities for a Lifetime was
provided, a copy of which is on file in the City Clerk's Office.
The Senior Volunteer Dinner was held at the Intracoastal Park C/ubhouse, one of the
City's new facilities. The Carolyn Sims Center was another new facility which included
the Denson Pool. A swim program would be available to seniors.
With regard to the State Grant from the Department of Elder Affairs, a Letter of Intent
was prepared and transmitted. Mr. Lulkin and Paula LeBlanc, Facilities Director, were
putting bids together and upon a response to the Letter of Intent, the bids would be
presented to the City Commission, probably in June 2008. When approved, Mr. Lulkin

awning for the rear of the building, awning replacement for the front, hurricane-rated
shutters, a new air-conditioner, six new surveillance cameras, a public address system,
an automatic toilet-flushing system and automatic door openers for handicap
bathrooms, at a total cost of $71/497. The Senior Center in Boynton Beach was one of
12 centers receiving the grant. Most cities were required to provide 25% in matching
