Minutes 04-23-08 CITY OF BOYNTON BEACH LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES: APRIL 23, 2008 PRESENT: Eleanor Daly, Donna Harmening, Dan Holthouse, Barbara McGee, Jeannie Taylor, Willie Pearl Wilson, Director Craig Clark, Asst. Director Anne Watts ABSENT: Valerie Pleasanton Chair Jeannie Taylor called the meeting to order at 4:00 pm. Director Clark announced that Virginia Farace's mother died last week. Virginia will establish an endowment in her mother's name upon her return from Pennsylvania. MINUTES: Dan Holthouse moved to accept the March minutes as distributed. CORRESPONDENCE: Director Clark has been advised that State aid will be cut. Last year the Library received $70,000. CHAIR'S REPORT: Chair Taylor distributed a sample speech she prepared to present to the City Commission budget hearings on Monday, July ih. Director Clark mentioned many services the Library offers. The Federal Government sends many people to libraries for assistance with food stamps and other welfare programs. We supply tax forms and resume assistance to job seekers. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: CONSTRUCTION UPDATE There is a delay in work on the old building. There are mold issues and a lot of damage to the roof. NEW BUSINESS: Barbara McGee offered to speak to the CRA about a trolley stop at the Library. DIRECTOR'S REPORT: The March monthly report numbers are way down since the library was closed until March 24th. An orientation was held for the Friends. A volunteer appreciation luncheon was held for the Friends. The Civic Center parking lot should be completed next week. The cafe operator is working with the architect. They are hoping for a June completion. A spaghetti dinner fundraiser is planned for the Schoolhouse Children's Museum. A benefit golf tournament is planned for Memorial Day weekend at Quail Ridge. Dollar General Stores have awarded a $5,000 grant to the Library to conduct an ESOL reading program. $125 will be allotted to each family. The Summer Reading Program will begin in June. Prizes will be given to the children. Messenger bags for school will be distributed to participants. Descriptive Videos (DVDs) for the vision impaired with a voice over of the action maybe available to check out or for programs in the Library in the future. The FY 2008-2009 budget was discussed. The Director will request no more cuts and to be allowed to fill frozen positions. ANNOUNCEMENTS: There are two alternate positions open on the board. The next meeting will be May 28th at 4:00 pm.
