Advisory Board Minutes
October 25, 2000
Present: Board Members Marva Collins, Marion Grammer, Alice Otis, Valerie
Pleasanton, Dorothy Walker, Alice Warren. Alternates Dan Holthouse, Judy Sanders.
Library Director Virginia Farace.
Absent: Jane Zimmerman (due to illness).
Chairperson Valerie Pleasanton opened the meeting at 3:20 PM in the program room of
the Boynton Beach City Library.
The minutes of the September meeting were approved as distributed with one correction:
the Acting Secretary taking minutes at that meeting was Alice Warren.
There was no correspondence to be read.
There was no Chair's Report to be given.
Under Unfinished Business, Virginia. reported on the CIP-Planning Phase. She has
written to the State Library requesting samples of RFPs to use as models for local
requests. The Boynton Beach City Commission has set up three tiers for the completion
of projects:
1) projects which are ready; 2) projects which need planning, including the L~rary; and
3) future projects. Virginia also reported that the Jog Road Branch of the County L~rary
is scheduled to open in December.
There was no New Business.
Virginia presented the Library Director's Report.
During Power Card/Library Card Sign-up Month in September, 589 new members
joined the Library, compared to 391 in September 1999. The total membership for
Fiscal Year 2000 is 20,707, an increase of more than 600 users over FY 1999.
Library staffers A.D. Henehan and Barbara Windham will attend the LSTA Grant
training workshop in Tallahassee to learn new state reporting requirements.
· There was another break-in at the Library on October 6th, which was similar to a
previous break-in. Some items were taken and deliberate vandalism left a general
mess in Virginia's office. The culprits have not yet been apprehended. Security
measures, including bids for an alarm system, are being discussed~with some
measures already being put into effect. During a general discussion of security
concerns at the Library, Valerie and Dorothy suggested that we invite the City YOuth
Board to inform us about their plans, projects, and requests - perhaps at one of our
meetings - following which we might offer our support to them.
· Virginia attended the Library Directors' Conference in Tallahassee October 4th, 5th,
and 6th, where she heard a report from the State Director as well as reports on a
statewide study of the educational roll of public libraries and of their important roll in
communities. She distributed copies of some of the reports.
· The Safe School Task Force is implementing its County School District program with
a four-pronged approach. Virginia is a member of the Task Force and its
"Prevention" sub-committee.
· Palm Beach School District boundaries are being changed. Virginia distributed copies
of the proposed changes and the existing boundaries with a letter fi:om the City of
Boynton Beach Education Advisory Board. Cities and the public may express ideas
and reactions to the County School District.
· On StaffUpdate, Virg~a reported that Youth Services Librarian Patricia Mooar is
recovering fi:om surgery.
· will be closed Friday and Saturday,
Veterans' Day. The Library will be closed
Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, November 23rd through 26th, for
Thanksgiving.
Announcements:
· Friends of the Library are promoting a special charity-shopping event at Burdines on
Saturday, November 4tl~
· The Boynton Cultural Centre is presenting a planning session, to include children, at
the 191~ Schoolhouse Museum on Saturday, O~obe~ 28tk
The meeting was adjourned at 4:30 PM. The next Library Board meeting will be held
Wednesday, November 29th, at 3:15 PM atthe Library. This will be a combined
November/December meeting.
