Minutes 08-12-98 MINUTES OF THE COMMUNITY RELATIONS BOARD MEETING HELD IN COMMISSION CHAMBERS, CITY HALL, BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA ON WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 12, 1998 AT 7:30 P.M. PRESENT Ron Washam, Chairman Wilfred Hawkins, Support Services Joy Currier, Vice Chairperson Specialist Maynie L. Boles Blanche Girtman Sheilah G. White ABSENT Stephanie Mingo-McCoy Brenda Lee Williams Belky Cruz Betsy Wallshein I. OPENING, PLEDGE, PRAYER Chairman Washam called the meeting to order at 7:40 p.m. II. ROLL CALL The Recording Secretary called the roll and a quorum was declared present. III. RECOGNITION OF VISITORS Chairman Washam welcomed Charlie Fisher to the meeting. Mr. Fisher is a member on the Advisory Board for Children and Youth and Chairman Washam thanked Mr. Fisher for his participation with this Board over the past several meetings. IV. AGENDA APPROVAL Vice Chair Currier moved that the Agenda be approved. Motion seconded by Ms. Girtman. Motion carried unanimously. V. MINUTES APPROVAL – Regular meeting of June 10, 1998, Workshop meeting of June 10, 1998 and Workshop meeting of June 24, 1998 Ms. Girtman moved that the minutes of all three meetings be approved. Motion seconded by Vice Chair Currier. Motion carried unanimously. MINUTES COMMUNITY RELATIONS BOARD MEETING BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA AUGUST 12, 1998 VI. CORRESPONENCE AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Ms. Girtman announced that the Family Picnic would be held Saturday, August 15, 1998 at Boat Club Park starting at 1:00 p.m. and everyone is encouraged to attend. VII. PUBLIC AUDIENCE Charlie Fisher, Board Member of the Advisory Board on Children and Youth, addressed the members and stated he was present this evening to introduce America’s Promise, which is an endeavor his Board is currently working on. America’s Promise is primarily a project that focuses on children in the community and a workshop meeting is th scheduled for Saturday, September 12 in the Library at 9:00 a.m. The first step of America’s Promise is to have a summit to bring the leaders of the project together. The th September 12 workshop will be a planning workshop for the summit and anyone that would like to attend is welcomed. Mr. Fisher informed the Board that Boca Raton is also organizing an America’s Promise. Vice Chair Currier stated she would like to become involved in America’s Promise and will be attending the workshop. Ms. Girtman also wished to address the audience and for the purpose of public record stated that kids are running up to cars openly selling drugs on the street and wanted this Board to be aware of this happening. Although police officers are present in the area, as soon as they are out of sight, the sales begin anew. Ms. Girtman expressed concern th since school will be opening on Wednesday, August 19 that children would become th exposed to drug selling on our City streets. This seems to be taking place on NW 9 Avenue and further into the neighborhood. Ms. Girtman stated that a crime watch program is being considered for the neighborhood. Vice Chair Currier inquired if a “Neighborhood March” might be in order again. Chairman Washam stated these marches always help the neighborhoods. Vice Chair Currier stated that Ms. Elizabeth Jenkins has started a neighborhood association recently. Mr. Hawkins said that a sign is being prepared for Ms. Jenkins neighborhood, which should be available soon. Also, Mr. Hawkins stated that the residents of Boynton Terrace have officially started their tenants’ association and have elected officers. Chairman Washam informed the members that he attended Ms. Jenkins’ neighborhood meeting and was very impressed by the attendance and what transpired from that meeting was very encouraging. The people in her neighborhood should be commended for their community spirit. Also, Vice Chair Currier stated that her neighborhood is in the process of instituting a neighborhood association. IX. NEW BUSINESS 2 MINUTES COMMUNITY RELATIONS BOARD MEETING BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA AUGUST 12, 1998 A. Boynton’s ‘STAR’ Program Chairman Washam stated that he would like the Board to vote on the adoption of the Boynton STAR Program, “Students Trained and Ready”. It is anticipated that this will thth become a yearly event and is scheduled this year for October 17 and October 24 between 9:00 a.m. and 12 noon at the Civic Center. The STAR Program will bring students from the Community to meet with mentors for tutoring and training for the purpose of entering the job interview process and to eventually enter the job workforce. Chairman Washam stated that Charlie Fisher and Steve and Lenora Waldman have been very instrumental in assisting with the job fair. There has been support from the Children and Youth Advisory Board and the Education Advisory Board. Volunteers and language facilitators have offered their assistance for the job fair as well. Many businesses in Boynton Beach expressed enthusiasm and would be bringing their human resource people with them. Motion Ms. Girtman moved that the STAR Program be adopted by this Board. Vice Chair Currier seconded the motion. Motion unanimously carried. Wednesday, Chairman Washam suggested another workshop session be held on th August 26 at 7:00 p.m. in Conference Room A. The purpose of the workshop will be to discuss the promotion of the job fair. Chairman Washam thanked Mr. Fisher for his assistance with the job fair. th Mr. Fisher stated that on August 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the Library Program Room, the Advisory Board on Children and Youth would be presenting a program on Safety in the Schools. Police Chief Marshall Gage and School Police Chief Jim Kelly will be making presentations and the program is open to the public. Motion Ms. Girtman moved that the meeting adjourn.
