which is an endeavor his Board is currently working on. America’s Promise is primarily
a project that focuses on children in the community and a workshop meeting is
th
scheduled for Saturday, September 12 in the Library at 9:00 a.m. The first step of
America’s Promise is to have a summit to bring the leaders of the project together. The
th
September 12 workshop will be a planning workshop for the summit and anyone that
would like to attend is welcomed. Mr. Fisher informed the Board that Boca Raton is
also organizing an America’s Promise. Vice Chair Currier stated she would like to
become involved in America’s Promise and will be attending the workshop.
Ms. Girtman also wished to address the audience and for the purpose of public record
stated that kids are running up to cars openly selling drugs on the street and wanted this
Board to be aware of this happening. Although police officers are present in the area,
as soon as they are out of sight, the sales begin anew. Ms. Girtman expressed concern
th
since school will be opening on Wednesday, August 19 that children would become
th
exposed to drug selling on our City streets. This seems to be taking place on NW 9
Avenue and further into the neighborhood. Ms. Girtman stated that a crime watch
program is being considered for the neighborhood.
Vice Chair Currier inquired if a “Neighborhood March” might be in order again.
Chairman Washam stated these marches always help the neighborhoods. Vice Chair
Currier stated that Ms. Elizabeth Jenkins has started a neighborhood association
recently. Mr. Hawkins said that a sign is being prepared for Ms. Jenkins neighborhood,
which should be available soon. Also, Mr. Hawkins stated that the residents of Boynton
Terrace have officially started their tenants’ association and have elected officers.
Chairman Washam informed the members that he attended Ms. Jenkins’ neighborhood
meeting and was very impressed by the attendance and what transpired from that
meeting was very encouraging. The people in her neighborhood should be commended
for their community spirit. Also, Vice Chair Currier stated that her neighborhood is in the
process of instituting a neighborhood association.
