Minutes 01-08-01 MINUTES OF THE SAFETY COMMITTEE MEETING HELD AT THE EZELL. HESTER CENTER, 1901 N. SEACREST BOULEVARD, BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA ON MONDAY, JANUARY 8, 2001 @ 10:00 A.M. Call to Order Chairman Magazine called the meeting to order at 10:07 a.m. II. Roll Call The Recording Secretary called the roll. A quorum was declared present. II1. Acceptance of Minutes of December 11, 2000 Regular Meetin~ Motion Mr. Falstad moved to accept the minutes, which was seconded by Mr. Lulkin and unanimously carried. Meeting Minutes Safety Committee Meeting Boynton Beach, FL January 8, 2001 IV. Safety Committee Education and Traininq Proqrar,- Chairman Magazine said that a Training program will be offered today, but would be presented later during the meeting because the speaker is currently attending another meeting. Ms. Patricia Spoerri, Professional Development Manager for the City, will be discussing safety training. V. OLD BUSINESS A. Fire Drills Chairman Magazine inquired what the plans were for 2001 and~Assistant Fire Marshal Borden reported that fire drills should begin sometime this month, but there are still some details that need to be worked out with the Fire Marshal. Assistant Fire Marshal Borden stated he is working on a schedule where the fire drills would be held on an annual basis in every building. Chairman Magazine requested he be furnished with a copy of the finalized schedule. Assistant Fire Marshal Borden noted that the schools in the City also have annual fire drills when the Fire Department is actually present, although they hold many more drills during the year without the Fire Department. B. Safety Newsletter Chairman Magazine reported that the newsletter should be coming out within a week. None "Proud to be a Safe Worker" Awards D. Departmental Inspections and Safety Meetings Chairman Magazine said he is still waiting for further documentation of departmental inspections and meetings and requested members to send these in within the next two weeks in order for him to make his report to the City Manager and the EXCL Team. E. Defensive Driver Course The course continues to be offered on a regular basis and anyone wishing to take the course should contact Risk Management. F. Infection Control Policy Mr. Bobich reported that the Committee has almost finished its review of the policy and it should be ready by the next Safety Meeting. I. Workplace Violence Policy Chairman Magazine announced that the Workplace Violence Policy has been finalized and has been reviewed and signed off by the City Manager. It is being recommended that the Policy be reviewed with all employees in each individual department. There will be some workplace vioJence training scheduled this year. J. Safety Policies Review Review of the safety policy is ongoing under the direction of Vice Chair Weise. Safety Committee Education and Training Program (Patricia Spoerri) Ms. Spoerri said that she should always be contacted at extension 6272 and that she was invited to today's meeting to introduce members to the City's Professional Development Program. Ms. Spoerri stated that a variety of training courses would be available every month to City employees. The courses being offered this month probably will not be available again for another year. Therefore, it is important to register for the courses when they are offered. The Program will be offering educational workshops that relate to specific needs of departments, because the City is so diversified. If any department is in need of a specific training, they should contact Ms. Spoerri to make the necessary arrangements. A workshop catalogue will be made available on the City's Intranet in the near future, together with all necessary registration forms. All e- mail correspondence should be forwarded to Ms. Spoerri at the Human Resource Department. Chairman Magazine inquired if safety related trainin issues w offered? Chairman Magazine noted that there is a great deal of resources that could be utilized to address safety issues. Ms. Spoerri also noted that in-house training could take place within the individual departments. Also, there may be cases where a person may have to go outside for a specific training if only one or two persons are involved. VI. NEW BUSINESS A. Operation Life Safer Mr. Bobich asked for an up-date on Operation Life Safer. Chairman Magazine stated that Ms. Para Webb from Risk Management will be taking the training and will be offering the program within City Departments and throughout the community as well. When another training session is offered, Vice Chair Weise will be taking the training. B. Other Assistant Fire Marshal Borden requested that the meeting Ioca. tions be held in one place instead of constantly moving to a new area. ChaIrman Magazine noted that in the past all the meetings had been held in the Police Training Room, which appears to be no longer available. Mr. Henehan said that he would check with Ms. Farace to see if the Library Program Room could be made available. Assistant Fire Marshal Borden said that the community room at Fire Station 3 is also available. Chairman Magazine noted that in the near future a list would be prepared for those persons who need to take the defensive driver course again since it has been three years since the first course was offered. VII. ANNOUNCEMENTS Assistant Fire Marshal Borden announced that the new Super Wal-kMart will be holding a grand opening and the Fire Department will be present to give away child safety seats which Wal-kMart has donated The Fire Department has two Personnel that have been trained to properly in;tall the seats and Ms. Danysh stated that there are also police personnel trained as well. Chairman Magazine requested that flyers be distributed to all City employees. Also, Chairman Magazine stated he was going to change the location to purchase safety shoes by City employees to the new WalCrMart the store located at Military Trail and Hypoluxo. Store instead of Chairman Magazine distributed flyers of the January 2001 training schedule from the Safety Council of Palm Beach County, Inc., as well as their schedule for the entire Year. Safety Council. January 8, 2001 All safety councils in Florida have withdrawn from the National Mr. Bobich inquired about the status of the Florida Division of Safety and would it be reorganized due to the election. Chairman Magazine stated that some of their staff and supplies are .now available through the University of South Florida. The Florida Division of Safety is a major partner with the Florida Partnership for Safety and Health, of which the City of Boynton Beach is also a partner.
