Minutes 07-23-08
CITY of BOYNTON BEACH
LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD
MINUTES: July 23, 2008
PRESENT: Jeannie Taylor, Chair, Eleanor Daly, Martin Helo, Barbara McGee, Willie Pearl Wilson, Director
Craig Clark, Assistant Director Anne Watts.
Absent: Donna Harmening, Valerie Pleasanton, Dan Holthouse
Chairman Taylor called the meeting to order at 4:00 pm.
The minutes of the June 25th meeting were approved as presented.
CORRESPONDENCE: None
CHAIR'S REPORT: Ms. Taylor attended the CRA meeting and reported that there will be a revised trolley
stop schedule. One of the changes to the schedule will include a stop at the library. There will be
another City budget meeting next week.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Director Clark related he was promised drawings for the new cafe next week.
They should be approved by the City in five to 6 weeks. There are problems with the roof repair.
Increased costs of drilling through concrete will delay completion until possibly October. The Summer
Reading Club has 600 members. Telephone calls were made to Summer Reading Club participants to
advise the non-completed members to pick up backpacks if eligible.
NEW BUSINESS: Debby-Coles Dobay, Public Arts Administrator, presented "Avenue ofthe Arts." All work
is on loan for one year. Permanent art work will be decided by the Arts Commission. Also to be
considered is the maintenance cost of permanent exhibits. Artists are reducing their prices. The two
favorites are 1) Rings of Promise and 2) Seahorse fountain. The seahorse fountain would be displayed
outside the Library next to the new cafe. The water would be recirculated. Interior library art is also
being considered for the future. The Board voted to support the Arts Commission recommendations.
Non-returned borrowed library items were discussed. Director Clark is considering the use of an outside
collection agency, Unique Management Services, Inc., who specializes in collecting library items.
Currently there are on average 130 non-returned items monthly. The Board voted to support the use of
a more "friendly" collection service such as Unique Management other than a typical collection agency.
Eleanor Daly feels that the DVD collection is in excess, especially in recent TV program collections.
Director Craig relates that the size of our DVD collection is considered average nationwide. Eleanor feels
that the processing in/out of this media is time consuming and could be spent better in other ways. She
feels that there should be more scrutiny of DVD choices.
LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Requested Board members to seek new participants for the board as two
full time members are leaving.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: The August 27th meeting has been cancelled. The next meeting will be on
September 24th at 4:00 pm. The meeting was adjourned at 5:20 pm.
