Minutes 02-02-00 MINUTES OF THE COMMUNITY RELATIONS BOARD MEETING HELD IN COMMISSION CHAMBERS, CITY HALL, BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA, ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2000 AT 7:00 P.M. PRESENT Ron Washam, Chairman Dan DeCarlo, Neighborhood Project Beth Miller, Vice Chairperson Specialist Joy Currier Brett Sherman Brenda Williams ABSENT John Critchett Blanche Girtman Hansome Jones I.OPENING, PLEDGE, PRAYER Chairman Washam called the meeting to order at 7:25 p.m. Chairman Washam asked Joy Currier to lead the members in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag followed by a moment of silent prayer. II.ROLL CALL The Recording Secretary called the roll and a quorum was declared present. IIIRECOGNITION OF VISITORS . Chairman Washam acknowledged the presence at the meeting of Quintus Greene, Brian Edwards and Eddie Currier and thanked them for their attendance. IV. AGENDA APPROVAL Vice Chair Miller moved to approve the Agenda with the following exceptions: Change the meeting time to March 1, 2000 for the next meeting and change the time of tonight’s meeting from 7:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Motion was seconded by Brenda Williams and carried unanimously. 1 MEETING MINUTES COMMUNITY RELATIONS BOARD BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA FEBRUARY 2, 2000 V. MINUTES APPROVAL Brenda Williams moved to accept the minutes of the January 5, 2000 Town Meeting as submitted. The motion was seconded and carried unanimously. The minutes are approved as submitted. VICORRESPONDENCE AND ANNOUNCEMENTS . Chairman Washam expressed regret that he missed the Appreciation Dinner at Benvenutos and heard that it was great. Joy Currier said that 150 valentines had been made for babies in the Head Start th program and that a pizza party would be held on the 14. Vice Chair Miller announced that the Exchange Club would be putting on a pancake breakfast at Barista Cafe in Boynton on February 13 for $5 a person. There will be a motorcycle procession starting at Boynton Dinosaurs and ending at Okeeheelee Park. There will be a motorcycle show in the morning and a kiddie area. They need volunteers since they are expecting 3,000 to 5,000 people. Chairman Washam mentioned the Mentoring Program at Hester Park in the afternoon where they are teaching children how to use computers. He has advertised to the Key Club at Santaluces and has gotten a few of the young people to come. Chairman Washam asked that if anyone knew of any young persons who want to be teachers or want to come and help, to please let him know. It is an especially great program because it is kids helping kids. VIIPUBLIC AUDIENCE . Brian Edwards assumed the podium to speak in the Public Audience forum. He thanked the Board for the opportunity of being there and expressed his intention of getting to know what the Board is doing. He referred to the Combined Board Forum on February 19 at the Library at 12:00 noon and inquired as to whether all the Boards were invited. Chairman Washam noted that although all Boards are invited the community and socially oriented ones usually attend. th Mr. Edwards mentioned that the 19 was the same day as the Boynton Beach Faith- Based Development Corporation’s big event from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Chairman Washam asked if that group had approached this Board in any way but no one was aware of any such contact. Chairman Washam asked that the Board be kept updated on their efforts to get their group off the ground and offered the resources of this Board on their behalf. Chairman Washam thanked Brian Edwards for bringing it up. Dan DeCarlo will contact the group and see if they can come to this Board’s April meeting. 2 MEETING MINUTES COMMUNITY RELATIONS BOARD BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA FEBRUARY 2, 2000 VIII.OLD BUSINESS 1Martin Luther King Boulevard Clinic ) Chairman Washam asked Dan DeCarlo to open the discussion on the Martin L. King Clinic. A discussion ensued pertaining to the proposed Clinic. The discussion covered such areas as funding, not-for-profit status, needs assessments, and strategies. Mr. DeCarlo is arranging a meeting for the Board with Bethesda Hospital during the week of February 8 - 11 to discuss the issue. th 2)20 Annual Black Awareness Celebration 2000 Chairman Washam mentioned that February is Black Awareness month. The Parks & Recreation Board is sponsoring a whole list of activities beginning with the Mildred Walker Youth Recognition Luncheon at the Catalina Holiday Inn at 12 p.m. on Saturday, th February 12 and ending on Sunday, February 27, with a Basketball Tournament at Hester Center from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. IX. NEW BUSINESS 1) Select March meeting place for the regular Board meeting . After discussion Dan DeCarlo was directed to try to get Ezell Hester Park for the March meeting. The regular April meeting will be in the Chambers and May will probably be in the Senior Center. Mr. DeCarlo said that as soon as confirmation could be made of the meeting places he would notify the Board immediately. 2) Quintus Greene, the new Development Director for the City of Boynton Beachintroduced himself , and said it was a pleasure to attend this meeting. Mr. Greene has been in the job for three weeks now and he wanted to become familiar with this Board’s activities. Mr. Greene noted that this Board makes a very important contribution to the City of Boynton Beach. Chairman Washam thanked Mr. Greene for coming. Chairman Washam also commented that the Mayor has expressed a desire to attend this Board’s meetings and that all the elected officials were welcome at any time. 3)Youth in Government Day A discussion was held concerning the date for this event. Chairman Washam suggested that the Board prepare a brochure to be given out and Vice Chair Miller said that a booth could be manned during the peak hours. Dan DeCarlo said that he would make appropriate changes to the brochure. X.
