LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD
MINUTES: JUNE 25, 2008
PRESENT: Eleanor Daly, Donna Harmening, Martin Helo, Barbara McGee, Valerie Pleasanton, Willie Pearl

Chairman Taylor called the meeting to order at 4:00 P.M.
The minutes of the May 28th meeting were approved as presented.
CORRESPONDENCE: None
CHAIR'S REPORT: Ms. Taylor spoke about cut backs in library budgets throughout the state. Libraries
are cutting back on hours of operation, staff, and purchases of books, etc. The Milton Library has a "Pigs
Can Fly" program. Children make piggy banks and distribute around the area. Funds collected go to the
library.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Mr. Martin "Marty" Helo, a new alternate member of the board was
introduced. He told us of his many life experiences.
Director Clark had attended a construction meeting earlier today. The contractor was absent due to
illness. Work is being started on the roof on the old building. This will take 2 to 3 weeks to complete. The
time frame after that is unknown.
Director Clark is working with the Friends to plan a Grand Opening Gala. This will be a fund -raising
event.
The cafe is being held up by the architect. They offered assurances of cooperation today. Director Clark
gave them a one week deadline.
Barbara McGee spoke to the CRA about a trolley stop. They told her they have had many inquiries about
this. Signage and scheduling would need to be addressed. They will have an answer by October.
The revised Meeting Room Guidelines were distributed. Board members had questions and suggestions.
Director Clark will refer some concerns to the City attorney.
NEW BUSINESS: Director Clark discussed the web site.
Asst. Director Anne Watts spoke about the American Dream Grant and her participation with the
Women's Circle. We will be working with them through January. Ms. Watts told us about the
tremendous response to the Summer Reading Club. 549 children have signed up to date. Age's birth
through grade 12 is eligible. It was necessary to place an emergency order for additional supplies. An
abbreviated story time was added to the program. The book bags will be passed out in July.
LIBRARY DIRECTOR"S REPORT: The monthly report was distributed. Director Clark commented on the
increased circulation. He is very pleased with the way things are going. Many people are using the
wireless service with their own laptops. There have been some issues with unattended children.
The next meeting will be on July 23rd at 4:00 P.M.

Administrative Services/Public Relations
Library Director, Asst. Director & Youth Librarian attended the American Library
Association Annual Conference.
Admin. Secy. attended the SEFLIN training program: Join the Elder Explosion.
Admin. Secy. attended the monthly Chamber meeting.
Library Building/ Construction
Demolition is 100% complete in the old library building. Mold remediation has
been completed. Library furniture has been ordered. Still waiting on final
architectural drawings to be reviewed and sealed by architect for P. Logan's
Cafe. Waiting for Sessoms to provide an updated construction schedule.

Special Services-
Library Archives
(Janet DeVries) Presented "History of Boynton Beach" special PowerPoint
Presentation to the Arts Commission. Attended Leadership 2008 Day. Provided
over twenty messages via Webbus for BBlV. Gave third required speech at
Toastmaster's for 30% completion of the Competent Communicator's track.
Provided research for the South Palm Beach (Boynton) Inlet to receive State of
Florida Historic Marker.
Interviewed by Sun-Sentinel regarding the Schoolhouse Children's Museum's
nomination in the Parent's Pick Awards sponsored by Nickelodeon Cable lV
Station. As of the June 30th deadline, the museum had 54% of the votes in the
Best Museum in the Miami area for "little kids. II We are in contention with 4 other
South Florida museums in the category. Sent 77 individual invoices to
constituents with memberships expiring in July. Created over 50 membership
cards and materials for new and renewing museum members.

Local Grant:
Commissioner Marlene Ross granted $1,500.00 from the City's discretionary
budget to support development of the museum's Home School Classes which will
include curriculum development. Thank you letter has been mailed.
The museum director's 2008 application to the Lattner Foundation was awarded
$10,000.00.
County Grant:
The museum's Palm Beach County Cultural Council grant award of $12,763.00
has received final approval.
State Grant:
The museum director's state grant submitted in March was awarded $34,000.00.
Because of State budget cuts, the Historical Division, which awarded the grant,
has been merged with the Cultural Division and they should make an
announcement by July or early August as to the disposition of available money
for grant awards.

Jan. - December 07: 55,073 (This number includes all facility rental
patrons. )
May 2008: 2,011 The museum has had a huge spike in general attendance
that is concurrent with its new Radio Disney adds, so the new venue seems to be
helping in promotion.

Explorer's Club:
The museum's own summer camp (Explorer's Club) is now filled for the summer.
