5. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF DECEMBER 4, 1995
Ms. Stranahan moved to approve the minutes of the December 4, 1995 meeting. Ms.
Graham seconded the motion which carried unanimously.
6. SENIOR ACTIVITIES AT CITY FACILITIES
Sharon Golden advised that she prepared a pamphlet by extracting information from the
Adult Fair area of "Funfare Magazine". She focussed on classes geared for the 50 years
of age and over group. Programs at each of the facilities are listed in the pamphlet.
The Madsen Center is programmed by Ms. Golden. It has a very active shuffleboard group
of over 388 members. Bridge, pinochle and chess are also offered. The Exchange Club
meets there on the first and third Wednesday evenings of each month. Ms. Golden listed
the dates available for use. Those Thursdays can be programmed for daytime and
nighttime use.
Ms. Golden advised that senior-oriented programs are also offered at the Civic Center.
She has a mailing list for "Adults on the Go". The mailing list contains over 900 names.
Two to three trips per month are offered each month at a reasonable price.
The City's "senior hub" is comprised of the Library, Arts Center, Civic Center, and the
Madsen Center. In addition, senior programs are offered at Hester Center and Wilson
Center. A nutrition program is offered Monday through Friday at Boat Club Park through
the Palm Beach County Senior Services Nutrition Division. The Wilson Center also offers
a lunch program.
Chairwoman Collins pointed out that the Mae Volen Center in Boca Raton receives funding
through the State to service seniors from Boca Raton to Lake Worth. Lake Worth receives
funding to service seniors in their area. We miss out on that funding because we do not
have a center.
The Senior Advisory Board offers a social once a month to build up a support group. Many
of the seniors in the community have no where to go to socialize. This is a need which
remains to be fulfilled.
7. UPDATE, SENIOR CENTER - REPORT BY BETH BAILEY
Ms. Bailey reported that she spoke with the City Manager about the Madsen Center and its
availability on a full-time basis. This is a situation that will not be able to be worked out. A
major consideration is the question of where the money will come from. The City's funds
and facilities are limited. A lot of activities are now ongoing in City facilities. Combining

them all will not be easy to accomplish. It is possible that a grand marketing plan can be
put together in the future to combine some of the programs. Ms. Bailey suggested using
the schedule compiled by Ms. Golden to begin on a small-scale basis. She recommends
using the next regular meeting to work on a plan to utilize the Madsen Center for the one
day a week it is available. This will help determine interest by seniors.
In response to Ms. Golden's question, Chairwoman Collins advised that the Senior
Advisory Board does not have a mailing list. They depend on the Boynton Beach Times,
flyers, and word of mouth for advertisement. Ms. Bailey advised that the next Funfare
Magazine will have a special section known as Senior Fair which lists activities for seniors.
Mr. Eney questioned how the coordinators and instructors are recruited for the programs.
Ms. Golden advised that they are interviewed and must have a talent for the class. They
then get a percentage of the class fee.
Ms. Bailey will contact Wayne Williams to do a feature story, and possibly publish an
article in "Senior Living".
8. ACTIVITIES FOR SENIORS - THURSDAY, JANUARY 25, 1996
Chairwoman Collins feels it is important to express the fact that we would like to have a
senior center and advertise that for the time being, we will have activities one day a week.
Seniors can bring a "brown bag" lunch, and bingo can be included as part of the activities.
On January 25th, the board has an event planned for the Madsen Center. At that time,
this new plan will be discussed and perhaps volunteers can be secured for the one-day-
per-week program. Chairwoman Collins will work on a major advertising push through a
media release.
This one-day-a-week program can begin on February 8, 1996. Chairwoman Collins invited
Ms. Golden to attend the event on January 25th for the purpose of making a presentation
on the programs that are available for seniors.
The January 25 event will be from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., at the Civic Center. Country
dancing will be offered. All future events will be held at the Madsen Center.
Ms. Bailey advised that the bus situation has not been decided upon yet. A comparison of
City routes and County routes is being prepared. The City Commission plans to hold a
workshop meeting to discuss the transportation issue.
9. G.A.L.A. IN MARCH - SHALL WE PROMOTE A SENIOR CENTER?
A suggestion was made to have a committee at the G.A.L.A. on March 22, 23, and 24, to
promote the bus service and the use of the senior center. She further stated that at one

time, it was suggested that the boards share a booth to promote themselves and their
purpose. She is not aware of the feelings of other board members with respect to that
suggestion.
Consensus
There was a consensus of the board to participate in the G.A.L.A.
Ms. Bailey feels this will be a great opportunity to advertise that the Madsen Center will be
open one day per week for senior activities.
10. OTHER BUSINESS
None
11. ADJOURNMENT

at 4:45 p.m.
