SENIOR ADVISORY BOARD
BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA OCTOBER 2, 1995
Ms. Stranahan moved to accept the minutes of the September 11, 1995 meeting. Ms.
Graham seconded the motion which carried unanimously.
5. FUTURE PLANS - CIVIC CENTER - OCTOBER 26, 1995
Ms. Graham has arranged to have the tappers provide entertainment on October 26th. In
addition, she will request that Edith Holt accompany her in one or two songs to allow time
for the tappers to change costumes during the program. This entertainment program will
not last longer than one hour; therefore, bingo will also be available. Chairwoman Collins
requested donations of small items to be used as prizes. Beth Bailey, Public Information
Officer, will be apprised of the availability of drinks from McDonald's. The members will
bring cookies.
Chairwoman Collins explained that from conversations she has had with citizens, there is a
great deal of interest in a senior center. The board's goal for this year is to determine
whether or not the City can support such a center. It is important that the questionnaires
go out to the public so that they can be filled out and returned. In the spring, a survey was
disseminated. Only eight or nine responses were returned, but all were in favor of a senior
center. Chairwoman Collins feels that the reason for the poor response was that there was
no one coordinating the effort. She recommends distributing these surveys at every event
the Senior Advisory Board is involved with. She will ask Ms. Bailey to run copies of the
surveys and distribute them throughout the City. She will also request that the survey be
advertised in the newspapers.
6. COMING ATTRACTIONS - CIVIC CENTER - NOVEMBER 30 & DECEMBER 28
The Senior Advisory Board has been granted permission to use the Civic Center on these
two dates. Ms. Stranahan will attempt to arrange for line dancing for the November 30th
event, and Chairwoman Collins will contact Reverend Brennan to try to arrange for a
Christmas performance on December 28th.
7. OTHER - DECEMBER 1
On December 1, there will be a Health Fair at Publix on Congress Avenue which will be
conducted along the sidewalk from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The Senior Advisory Board
will participate by manning a table to disseminate information. There will be two shifts of
representatives manning the table--one from 9:30 a.m. until 12:00 noon, and the second
from 12:00 noon until 3:00 p.m. Surveys will be available at the table.
Chairwoman Collins acknowledged the presence in the audience of Commissioner Shirley

MINUTES
SENIOR ADVISORY BOARD
BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA OCTOBER 2, 1995
Jaskiewicz.
Chairwoman Collins apprised Commissioner Jaskiewicz of the Board's goal relative to a
senior center. Discussion also included the bus schedule and ridership. Chairwoman
Collins remarked that the 7:00 a.m. starting time for the buses is too early even for those
people who use it to go to work. Other members of the board advised that the 7:00 a.m.
bus they have observed is always empty. Chairwoman Collins said many people had
hoped the buses would be available later in the evening to take young people home from
the Mall.
Commissioner Jaskiewicz advised that the schedules can be adjusted, and she offered to
raise this issue with the Commission. She did point out, however, that the bus may be
empty on one route, while ridership may pick up on another route. It is Commissioner
Jaskiewicz' opinion that the ridership should be evaluated so that alterations can be made.
Ms. Stranahan reported that the bus stop just off SW 23rd entering Bethesda Hospital is in
a very peculiar location. Commissioner Jaskiewicz feels this may be a location where a
shelter will be built. She will check on this.
Chairwoman Collins feels the bus schedules should be studied and feels a committee
should be organized to perform this study.
Commissioner Jaskiewicz explained that when the Civic Center is rebuilt as part of the
redevelopment of the downtown, it would be appropriate to include a senior center. She
did point out, however, that the construction of a new Civic Center is planned for the future.
8. ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business to come before the board, Ms. Graham moved to adjourn
the meeting at 4:30 p.m. Mr. Sackett seconded the motion which carried unanimously.
