IV. Safety Committee Education and Training Program – Safety Video
A Safety Video entitled Marks Have Meaning was viewed. The video explained the
importance of understanding the meaning of marks when performing excavation work.
Colors represent different facilities. Permanent markers are placed by Utilities.
Temporary markers, such as flags, are placed by “locators”. There are also marks for
subaqueous utilities. The marks define horizontal routes, not depth. Always call,
Sunshine State One-Call of Florida at 1-800-432-4770 before excavating at least two
full business days in advance, or 10 business days for underwater work. Plans for
underground routes do not always match up, so it is important to be specific about the
location of the excavation site when calling in for excavation. A nationwide program
could also be used by dialing “811”.
The video was not only an employee safety program, it involved the safety of the
general public. Even homeowners working in the yard should call the number. Chair
Bobich indicated, depending on the circumstances, it could be a felony to remove flags
placed by locators. The Utilities Department has a wallet card with the different kinds of
information on the topic. Sunshine State One-Call of Florida will arrange to have
members come to the worksite and have a meeting if requested.
V. Old Business
A. Fire Drills
Vice Chair Altman announced fire drills were held at the Municipal Tennis Center,
Intracoastal Park, the Hester Center, Denison Pool, twice at the Sims Center, and a pre-
fire planning drill took place with the Ocean Lifeguards.
Jim MacIntyre, Fire Protection Engineer, was working on a PowerPoint presentation for
supervisors to conduct their own fire drills. Chair Bobich will contact him for additional
information and he suggested individuals needing fire drill training should contact Mr.
MacIntyre as well.
B. Proud to be a Safe Worker Awards
None.
C. Departmental Inspections & Safety Meetings
Chair Bobich reported he received several updates of items that were not credited on
the shared drive. He requested members review the Safety Inspections on the shared
drive to ensure each department inspection was accurately reflected.

None.
B. Other
Chair Bobich requested the members advise him of ideas for training for the various
departments. The information could be presented at the Safety Committee meetings or
in the department.
VII. Announcements
Some of the City departments had Meals Ready-to-Eat (MREs) that were distributed
during the hurricanes. Vice Chair Altman advised the ones his department had were
expired and he disposed of them; however, Chair Bobich noted they some were set to
expire in 2010. To err on the side of caution, the City would donate them after they
checked the expiration date.
Chair Bobich would check with the warehouse regarding the matter. Most of the meals
ready-to-eat included a chemical pack heater. Vice Chair Altman had the MREs
disassembled and the heaters removed and submerged in water, to avert a possible fire
risk when they were disposed of.
It was also announced the Denison Pool recently installed a new pool drain. There had
been new regulations put in effect, and the pool was the first in the county to meet the
requirements.
The meeting room temperature was discussed; as in the past, the room temperature
was very cold. It was noted the temperature was adjusted and the members were much
more comfortable.
