Minutes 05-11-09 MINUTES OF THE SAFETY COMMITTEE REGULAR MEETING HELD ON MONDAY, MAY 11, 2009, AT 10:00 A.M. Call to Order Mike Landress was Acting Chair and called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. II. Roll Call The Recording Secretary called the roll. A quorum was present. III. Acceptance of Minutes of 04/13/2009 regularmeeting Motion Ms. Rivers moved to accept the minutes as presented. Mr. Rumpf seconded the motion that unanimously passed. IV. Safety Committee Education and Training Program This item was deferred. 1 Meeting Minutes Safety Committee Boynton Beach, FL May 11, 2009 V. Old Business A. Fire Drills Mr. Landress advised fire drills were ongoing. Departments interested in holding fire drills should contact Jim McIntyre. Fire extinguisher training was also available. It was noted Public Works and the Library had fire extinguisher training. Ms. Rivers reported all of the recreation centers conducted fire drills. B. Proud to be a Safe Worker Awards None. C. Departmental Inspections & Safety Meetings Ms. Brown reported the inspection reports were being submitted and Mr. Bobich had received unexpected department reports as well. D. Defensive Driver Course Ms. Brown explained the Defensive Driving Course software was no longer supported. The Risk Management Department planned to unveil the new course, which was a PowerPoint presentation incorporating videos and other items on July 1, 2009. The course should take about one hour and fifteen minutes, followed by a test at the end. There were still some glitches that were being worked out. She indicated there were not many classes scheduled but if an employee needed to take the course, they would be scheduled. The classes would be held in the training room. Additionally, the course would also be available on CD. E. Incident Review Board Referrals None. VI. New Business A. Departmental Safety Issues Mr. Vicki advised in regard to the safety shoes, his Supervisor, Mike Dauta, requested he be included in any meetings and be apprised of any decisions concerning the Warehouse. Ms. Brown would pass the information on to Mr. Magazine. B. AED (defibrillator) Pads – Check yours to be sure they are not expired. Some may be out of date – available through the Warehouse along with batteries. 2 Meeting Minutes Safety Committee Boynton Beach, FL May 11, 2009 Mr. Landress had an Automatic Electronic Defibrillator (AED) with him and he demonstrated how to check the machine. The machines should be checked once a month for damage and cracks. There is a window and if there was a red wrench in it, the machine needed service. If a battery was needed, a red battery would appear as well. He demonstrated opening the machine and checking the date on the pads. He also demonstrated how to remove the battery, and advised the battery was good for two to three years. Replacement batteries and pads were available at the Warehouse. Departments that have the machines should check them every month and document it. There was a form used to track the inspections, which would be forwarded. Mr. Rumpf was not aware if there was a defibrillator in the West Wing. Mr. Landress was not aware of one there. There were 34 AED's Citywide. The Police Department has 9 or 10, the Fire Department and everyone in Administration had one, as did the Library, each recreation center and the pool. C. Other None. VII. Announcements Ms. Brown indicated there was a new law regarding seat belts that would become effective July 1, 2009. This law would allow law enforcement officers to pull over vehicles as a primary offense if the occupants were not wearing seat belts. It was believed wearing seat belts was required for all passengers in the vehicle. Ms. Brown reported they were observing many employees driving without seat belts, particularly in the Utilities Department. Another item brought to their attention was employees smoking in the vehicles. VIII. Next Meeting Date: Monday June 8, 2009, 10:00 a.m. Mr. Landress announced the next meeting was June 8, 2009. IX.
