ANNOUNCEMENTS Ms. Coles-Dobay was contacted by Larry Boytano from the Palm Beach County Cultural Council. The Council was interested in interviewing her and Artist Rick Beau Lieu next Tuesday regarding Boynton Beach’s Public Art. The episode would be a half-hour segment called Cultural Capital with Bill Nix and it would be aired on Palm Beach County TV 20. Ms. Coles- Dobay would email the members of the date when the episode would be aired. Lake Worth and Delray Beach artists and exhibit spaces would also be included in the episode. She noted there were different segments with different topics. Chair Ready announced there was a Live Art Auction entitled Twenty Artists/Twenty Bucks which was a Local Arts Happening. Anyone interested in attending could do so. The event would be held on August 7, 2009 at 332 N. Dixie Highway, Lake Worth from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. All bids started at $20. VI. PUBLIC ART PROJECTS A. Fire Station #5 Chair Ready advised she visited the Fire Station and was impressed. The mural painted by Artist Dana Donanty was beautiful. The floor mosaics by Artist Jeff Halverson depicting a digitally altered poster of a 9-11 memorial was on the second floor of the fire station. A sculpture entitled Brotherhood in Mourning made from nails to resemble a firefighter holding an actual piece of 9-11 debris by Firefighter Ray Altman was also on the second floor of the fire station. Chair Ready announced all of the artwork was beautiful. The members discussed the work. The sculpture was praised and thought to be an excellent translation of a dire situation. The detail was also noted to be amazing considering it was made of nails. A light emanating from the floor would be cast on the piece thereby creating a shadow behind the figure with the American Flag. On that day, 343 firefighters perished. A square piece of debris from 9-11 was situated in the figure’s hand. Two elements of the project remained to be installed which were the historical window images above the doors. The concept was firefighter equipment lighting would be made into lights that would flank the entryway doors. Members interested in viewing the work should contact Ms. Coles-Dobay to arrange a tour. There was agreement the work was done well, was tasteful, was well conceived and very impressive. There was discussion about the mosaic and the beams of light shining into the night. Some members commented they would have preferred to see a more subtle gradation of the light beam shining into the night and that it was too stark, while other members liked the mosaic the way it was. The Fire Station/Emergency Operations Center would have a grand opening - anticipated to be in September, as there were still details that remained to be finished. The remainder of the art should be installed within the next two weeks. The artists would be present at the grand opening. Ms. Coles-Dobay asked to participate in the event so the Arts Commission could celebrate the art component of the building and she would like to publish a brochure detailing the art elements there. Plaques would be available for viewing but they would not really explain the 9-11 sculpture piece, what the mural timeline does, or any of the historical elements in the lobby. 2 Meeting Minutes Arts Commission Boynton Beach, Florida July 28, 2009 It was discussed that in the business world, September was the worst month to do anything - having a grand opening in October would be better. It was also a good opportunity for press for the Arts Commission. The Arts Commission would put together a brochure and post information on their website. The Public Information Officer in the Fire Department issues the press releases. It was hoped the Public Information Officer would include information about art since art was an attractor which could draw attention to the building for tours. Some public buildings and fire stations have public art. There was discussion about the art on the second floor. There would be other items on the walls but she did not know what they would be. Downstairs there was a cabinet which would hold the ceremonial bell helping to create a historical lobby look and feel. There would be cabinets having minimal, but tastefully done displays of firefighting equipment. Discussion followed whether the work would be advertised in New York so individuals there could see the work and take a trip. There was dialogue that individuals interested in culture would look at a destination to see what art was available. That concept was the impetus of why they have public art posted. Discussions were held with Artavox, the Palm Beach County Cultural Council and the Artists of Palm Beach County about how, as a group, they could collaborate on programs so they could be brought county wide. They were also working with the Palm Beach County Tourist Bureau to advertise and market the public art that collectively exists within the county. On a different note, Ms. Tengbergen had visited the Killington area recently. The five counties in that area were developing a certificate program for teaching artists so they would all be schooled and be involved in art and culture centers. VII. AVENUE OF THE ARTS A. Placement recommendation for “The Family” The members had been asked where they would like to see The Family artwork located. Each member discussed their preference; however, after further discussion, it was decided to wait for the Visioning workshop to make a decision. B. Eco/Environmental submissions A brief update was given. Approximately three or four submissions were received. It was noted there were a lot of exhibits occurring in South Florida. VIII. Vision Planning A. August 1, 2009, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. workshop agenda The Visioning workshop was planned for Saturday; however, only four members could attend. After discussion, there was consensus to reschedule the workshop for September 12, 2009. An update to the strategic visioning plan for the workshop meeting was distributed. The item contained proposed events and programs which would be discussed at the next meeting. B.
