LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD
SEPTEMBER 23, 2009
PRESENT: Donna Harmening, Barbara McGee, John McGovern, Chair Jeannie Taylor, Valerie
Pleasanton, Willie Pearl Wilson

The meeting was called to order at 4:10 P.M.
Director Clark introduced the Library’s new America Corps volunteer, Lindsey Nuzzo.
AmeriCorps is a domestic version of the Peace Corps. They go to areas that need special literacy
services to the community. She works at the Library Monday thru Thursday, 32 hours per
week. She is paid a stipend and provided with housing. She will be awarded assistance in
furthering her education after a year of service. She was sponsored by the Palm Beach County
Literary Coalition. She offers homework help and tutoring to students. Anne Watts supervises
her work at the library.
MINUTES: The minutes of the July meeting were approved as submitted.
CORRESPONDENCE: Ms. Wilson brought in a Palm Beach Post article about the homeless and
restrictions in place concerning their activities in the library. She also shared her new email
address, WWilson31@yahoo.com.
CHAIR’S REPORT: Chair Taylor reported that we have openings on the Board for two
alternates. Ms. Taylor distributed a publication from the Florida Library Association telling how
libraries change lives. She also shared an article from the Library Journal.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Plans for the café were approved by the City Commission. A city
engineer will serve as the general contractor for the project. Completion should be in 3 to 4
months. Money for this project is being borrowed from a Landfill Fund at 3% interest. The
income from the lease will repay this loan in 68 months.
The new Library budget will is about $85,000 less than last year.
NEW BUSINESS: SchenkelShultz Architecture sent a photographer to the Library to take photos
to submit to the Library Journal’s Architectural Edition.
Director Clark reviewed the 2009-10 Long Range plan.
Valerie Pleasanton requested a report on the completion of goals for the fiscal year. Director
Clark said it would be available at the next meeting.
A Broadband Grant Opportunity was applied for by the State Library on our behalf.
Mayor Taylor contributed $1,500.00 to the Friends from his contingency fund.
The Friends bookstore has made about $5,400.00 to date. They are averaging about $1,200.00
each month.
Director Clark plans to ask the Friends to sponsor the Adult Reading Program and the Summer
Reading program.
The Friends Author luncheon is their major fund raiser.
Hunter’s Run has contributed an additional $1500.00 to the Library for the purchase of art.
DIRECTOR’S REPORT: A Library Technology Specialist position is vacant and will be posted In
the near future.
The City has funded the Museum director’s position for another year.
There is a plan to prepare a course on resume preparation and job search. Valerie suggested
this information should be made available to local businesses.
Ms. Pleasanton also recommended that Board vacancies be posted on the City web site. The

next meeting will be on October 28.
Mr. McGovern announced that he will tender his resignation due to other commitments.
