Minutes 01-13-10 MINUTES OF THE COMMUNITY RELATIONS BOARD MEETING HELD ON WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 13, 2010, AT 7:00 P.M. IN CITY COMMISSION CHAMBERS, BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA Present: Brian Miller Thelma Lyons, Board Liaison Joyce Mura Stanley Sorgman Phyllis Stern Regina Waterhouse Floyd Zonenstein Absent: Blanche Hearst-Girtman Lloyd McCoy I. Call Meeting to Order – Pledge of Allegiance The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. Motion Ms. Stern moved for Brian Miller to conduct the meeting as Chairman, as he was the past president. Ms. Mura seconded the motion that passed unanimously. Motion Brian Miller moved for Floyd Zonenstein to serve as Vice Chair for this evening. Ms. Mura seconded the motion that passed unanimously. The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag was led by Sanford Mayer, member of the audience. II. Roll Call The Recording Secretary called the roll. III. Recognition of Visitors The following attendees were recognized: 1 Meeting Minutes Community Relations Board Boynton Beach, Florida January 13, 2010 Sanford ("Sandy") Mayer, 2 Clubhouse Lane, Hunters Run, and President of its association, noted the association had received an invitation requesting all association presidents attend the Community Relations Board meetings. Mr. Mayer noted he was active in the Hunters Run Community and team leader for the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). He noted the Hunters Run community contributed yearly to the Community Relations Board's functions and projects. th Gertrude Sullivan, 201 NE 6 Avenue, HOB (Heart of Boynton) President, requested thst the Board look into the lack of sidewalks on NE 6 Avenue from Seacrest to 1 Street ndth and from Seacrest on the west side to 2 Street. There were no sidewalks on 6 Avenue for approximately two blocks in on the east and west sides. From that point, there were sidewalks for approximately two blocks and no sidewalks closer to Seacrest. Victor Norfus, 261 N. Palm Drive, was present. st Willie Aikens, 726 NE 1 St., HOB President, announced the Martin Luther King March th would be held on, Monday, January 18. The March would take place on MLK Boulevard to Seacrest and would end at St. John Missionary Baptist Church. A breakfast would follow and all were encouraged to participate. IV. Approval of Agenda – Additions, Deletions, Corrections A revised agenda was distributed. Motion Acting Vice Chair Zonenstein moved to approved the revised agenda. Ms. Mura seconded the motion that passed unanimously. V. Approval of Minutes of October 14, 2009 Meeting Motion Acting Vice Chair Zonenstein moved to accept the minutes. Ms. Mura seconded the motion that passed unanimously. VI. Announcements, Community & Special Events & Presentations ?HOB (Heart of Boynton) community hosts Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. community breakfast When: January 18, 2010 Time: 7:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. 2 Meeting Minutes Community Relations Board Boynton Beach, Florida January 13, 2010 Where: St. John Church (Fellowship Hall) 900 N. Seacrest Blvd. ?HOB (Heart of Boynton) Community Heritage Celebration, February 20 and 21, 2010 ?Hunters Run Tennis Carnival ?Women's Circle presents Circle of Hope Gala, February 8, 2010, 6:30 p.m. at Benvenuto's Ms. Stern announced the following: ?She had been in contact with William Orlove, a candidate for the City Commission, and he would be pleased to appear before the Board to discuss his platform if the Board members were interested in having him do so. ?Ms. Stern had donated approximately 80 books on behalf of the Board to Crosspointe Elementary School for the School's library drive. She was awaiting an acknowledgment letter from the School. ?Hunters Run would be having its annual Tennis Carnival for the Boynton Beach elementary, middle and high school students. The event was advertised in Funfare Magazine. In the event Mr. Norfus would be hosting a rummage sale, it was suggested the Board participate. It was also suggested the Board make a donation to the Haitian community. Acting Chair Miller inquired whether the City had taken any measures to collect funds, clothing or food in this regard. Thelma Lyons, Board Liaison, replied she had not received any information to date, but would be contacting the City Manager's Office with respect thereto. Any information received would be provided to the Board members. Acting Chair Miller telephoned Mayor Taylor, and he was advised Mayor Taylor would be meeting with the City Manager in the morning. If the City would be participating in a Haitian effort, the Board members could volunteer their services and participate as a group. Ms. Mura would work with Mr. Mayer and the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). Acting Chair Miller and Acting Vice Mayor Zonenstein agreed to visit the Haitian Church after the meeting. Sanford Mayer, 2 Clubhouse Lane, Hunters Run, noted he had offered the services of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) to Mary Watkins, Chief Operating 3 Meeting Minutes Community Relations Board Boynton Beach, Florida January 13, 2010 Officer for Hunters Run, to assist the Haitian people, and he made the same offer to the Community Relations Board. Victor Norfus, 261 N. Palm Drive, advised he would be submitting his application to serve on the Board. He announced the following: ?The Martin Luther King March would be held Monday, January 18, 2010 at 7:00 a.m. on MLK Boulevard to St. John Missionary Baptist Church. The March would be followed by activities and a breakfast/fundraiser. While an $8 donation would be required for the breakfast, the activities and events would be free. ?The Martin Luther King Banquet would be held Sunday evening at the Marriott on Congress Avenue. The tickets could be purchased from Harry Meeks at a cost of $50, the proceeds of which would go towards the MLK Committee for future events. ?A yard sale would be held February 13, 2010 and any donations would go toward the Heritage Celebration and to the Haitian community. In addition to the yard th sale, Mr. Norfus would be hosting a barbecue at his mother's home on 6 Avenue. ?He completed Foundations of Faith, a Boynton Beach African American History, and he would be making a presentation on the book for the Boynton Beach th Historical Society on Monday, February 15. The books could be purchased for $10. thth ?The Heritage Celebration would be held February 19 and February 20and he requested the Board man a booth at the event, as was done last year. Ms. Lyons announced the Women's Circle would be holding its "Circle of Hope" benefit on February 8, 2010 at Benvenuto's at 6:30 p.m. The proceeds of the $75 per-person cost would go to the Women's Circle. VII. Reports and Updates – Pride in Boynton ?Boynton Beach Holiday Parade Acting Chair Miller reported he drove an automobile in the Holiday Parade while Mr. Norfus marched. The Boynton Beach Community High School cheerleaders, dancers and drum line also participated. Acting Chair Miller and Vice Mayor Hay would work together to ensure the High School would have a float in next year's parade. By involving the High School with the Holiday Parade, younger and older students were 4 Meeting Minutes Community Relations Board Boynton Beach, Florida January 13, 2010 brought together. Acting Chair Miller encouraged Board members to help the High School students either with funds or to construct the float. Mr. Norfus added the High School participants were encouraged to attend the Heritage Celebration. Acting Chair Miller would bring this to the attention of the High School principal. Acting Vice Chair Zonenstein had requested Ms. Lyons contact the necessary parties to have the Board meeting notices posted on the marquee outside City Hall. Ms Lyons advised she had contacted the City Manager's Office and was advised that notices were posted only for special events and not for advisory boards. It was noted the Heritage Celebration would be held during Presidents' Week and grandparents could bring visiting grandchildren to the Fest. Ms. Stern pointed out that Hunters Run produced a publication which included City events, and the Heritage Fest could be possibly be included in the February issue. The Hunters Run liaison was Renee Stern, and her telephone number could be provided. st Willie Aikens, 726 NE 1 St., noted the HOB (Heart of Boynton) community was in the process of distributing flyers and posters at schools and various locations for the Heritage Fest and would be interested in providing flyers to various contacts and organizations. The community also advertised on the internet and radio. Acting Chair Miller agreed to post the flyers at Village Royale on the Green and Village Royale. st Carol Mahoney, 737 SW 1 Avenue, inquired whether the Heritage Celebration could be advertised on BBTV. Ms. Lyons would get back to Ms. Mahoney. At the request of Acting Chair Miller, Ms. Waterhouse introduced herself and provided her credentials. VIII. Old Business None IX.
