Update - "Community for a Lifetime" The Community for a Lifetime met on the April 14th and decided on two possible dates, either June 5th or June 12th for the "CarFit" program. Mr. Lulkin was going to check with Elder Affairs for a date for the event. The Police Department may take part in the "CarFit" to adjust the children's seats and booster seats. The "CarFit" program would be at the Senior Center on a Saturday morning approximately 9:00 am to noon. The final decision would be made by Elder Affairs. A member of Community for a Lifetime, brought in a program called 5 Wishes from the Innovated Hospice Care. On October 11th they will hold a pizza lunch from 1 0:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Senior Center. (5 Wishes is discussed in further detail under New Business.) .:. Update - Atlantic University Flyer Chair Chamberlain spoke with Mr. Lulkin who still has not done the rewrite of the Palm Beach Atlantic University flyer for student volunteers. It was noted that the only people who volunteered where seminarians, and a couple of people who came in only for a couple of days. .:. Update - On other Colleges for Volunteers Report Ginny O'Connell Chair Chamberlain recalled from the March meeting that Ms. O'Connell spoke about how she called several colleges and would see if she could find any other colleges. Ms. O'Connell reported that one of the problems with getting college students to volunteer at the Senior Center is that they like jobs that pay. Another problem is the hours; college students, particularly those from Palm Beach Community, take either very early classes or late classes and they don't like to volunteer. 2 Meeting Minutes Senior Advisory Board Boynton Beach, Florida May 3, 2010 Ms. O’Connell was attempting to locate colleges that offer a recreation and education management type program where you would have a better chance of getting volunteers. Flagler University does have such a program; unfortunately, they are not local. Ms. O’Connell also contacted the local colleges (FAU, Palm Beach Community and Lynn University). They do not offer the program. Ms. O’Connell will look into a few more colleges in the local area. The high school was a problem because their curricular contains so many classes. Chair Chamberlain noted only 2 or 3 students responded to the flyer. The students stay just long enough to get the credit for volunteering. They don’t want to do volunteer work on an on going basis. Since the high school students are required to do so many hours of community service for credit, they start their volunteer work the summer between junior high school and high school. Another option is to get the junior high school students to volunteer just for the summer break. Ms. O’Connell also suggested going to some of the local churches to seek volunteers through the youth groups. Ms. Spinelli suggested contacting the Eagle Scouts. Court ordered Community Services was also suggested. Mr. Lulkin commented that if it is court ordered, it has to go through the Police Department. The focus is for young people to volunteer for accreditation for the Center. Update – Chair Exercise Flyer ? Chair Chamberlain would like to combine the chair exercise program that she had received along with the exercises that she received from her therapist for the flyer. Chair Chamberlain would meet with others and discuss what exercises should be included in the flyer. She would also check on the budget for the paper needed to run off copies of the flyer. 3 Meeting Minutes Senior Advisory Board Boynton Beach, Florida May 3, 2010 New Business 5 Wishes Innovated Hospice Care ?
