VIII. COMMENTS
a. Chair
Chair Kaiser spoke about the French Legion of Honor program and commented there
was an ongoing relationship with the French Consulate. Abbey Delray invited the
French dignitaries to a luncheon and another ceremony to honor more of the local
veterans was desired. He thought there could be more publicity for Boynton Beach in
the future.
He noted a French destroyer was recently in Miami for a port visit and Veterans from
Naples and Palm Beach were presented with the French medal at a ceremony. He
suggested an indoor function at the Civic Center be planned for them. While attending
the ceremony in Miami, he also learned that the medals could not be awarded
posthumously and the dignitary indicated he would like to present citations to the
widows.
Chair Kaiser requested the members endorse him inviting the French government to
return to Boynton Beach and have the military widows recognized with the citation. Kurt
Lutschke who fought with the French Underground, could be honored then, which was
another press opportunity for Boynton Beach.
Mr. Magazine explained that holding a function at the Civic Center was contingent on
the Center’s schedule and, with the upcoming budget cuts, a weekend event may not
be possible. Chair Kaiser suggested holding the function midweek and indicated
several dates for the event could be offered. Mr. Magazine would check with the
Recreation and Parks Department to see if a location was available sometime around
the Fourth of July.

a. Memorial Day Remembrance, May 30, 2010
Chair Kaiser advised the flags to place on the graves of Veterans at Boynton Beach
Memorial Park were received. He requested the members arrive at 8:30 a.m. on May
28, 2010. He also indicated he would bring soda, and as has been done in the past,
schoolchildren would assist the Veterans with the flags. The Memorial Day Tent Service
would be May 30, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. Members were asked to bring folding chairs and
Post 164 would donate the hotdogs, hamburgers, rolls and other food for the collation at
the American Legion afterward.
b. Bicentennial Park Monuments
i. Korean War & POW/MIA Monuments, June 25, 2010, 11:00 a.m.
Chair Kaiser explained the Korean War Veterans were celebrating the 60th Anniversary
of the Korean War, and were funding the monument. The celebration would commence
at 11 a.m. Chair Kaiser spoke with Bud’s Seafood and Chicken, and CVS Drug Store
regarding parking when the Veterans hold their events. They no longer had a problem
with the Veterans using the parking lots for an hour when an event was scheduled if
they were advised of the event ahead of time. Additionally, those establishments would
be mentioned in the event program and the attendees would be encouraged to visit
them.
It was noted there was a State Convention scheduled for that same day. Chair Kaiser
explained the Korean War Veterans would be present with their Color Guard and they
were attempting to enhance the event by having all the Color Guards present. Only the
Korean War Veterans and the American Legion Color Guards would present. Having
the Color Guards was impressive and greatly added to the ceremony.
Organizations funding a monument selected the guest to attend the event. The Korean
War Veterans invited Congressman Klein as their guest.
Mr. Magazine agreed to see if the Mayor was available to attend the event and he
announced the Vice Mayor would attend the Memorial Day Ceremony. Chair Kaiser
noted he had provided a list of the upcoming Veterans’ events to the City.

Chair Kaiser advised he was unaware of any other events scheduled in honor of the
Vietnam War and Gold Star Mothers. He urged the members to encourage others to
sponsor bricks for Gold Star Mothers and noted there were 50 bricks remaining to be
sold. There would be a row memorializing the Gold Star Mothers plus the monument.
A gold star would be set in granite and the circle would be complete. Chair Kaiser
agreed to contact the Vietnam Veterans and reminded the members the date of the
event was November 11, 2010.
Chair Kaiser inquired if the Veteran’s display could be returned to the lobby of City Hall.
He also commented there would be an Armed Forces Day event held on Saturday, May
15th at 5 p.m. at the American Legion Hall. The posts were invited to bring their colors
