Library Advisory Board Minutes
September 22, 2010
The Library Advisory Board meeting was called to order at 4:00 p.m. by Chair Jeannie Taylor. All board
members were present with the exception of Barbara Erlichman and Barbara McGee. The minutes of the
July 28th meeting were approved as distributed.
Correspondence: A note was received from Barbara Erlichman advising the board of her absence.
Unfinisbed Business: Library Director, Craig Clark advised that the next step in the budget process was
final approval at the next commission meeting. The commission passed a motion at the last meeting to
restore two positions including a part-time reference librarian. If the commission restores the positions,
the library will not have to outsource technical services, which will help restore a portion of the book and
materials budget. The open Division Head position will be filled with two part-time employees to avoid
the extra expense of benefits. Unfortunately, the policing budget has been reduced to 16 hours weekly
from the current 26 hours per week. This may have a big impact on library security as there were many
kid/teen issues this year which the officers handled. Craig further discussed the magazine adoption
program which has raised about $470 and restored twenty-one magazine subscriptions. The board was
encouraged to help publicize the program. The Interlibrary Loan program monthly volume dropped to
three loans from an average of thirty per month after the adoption of the new ILL fees. As expected, the
fee helped cut down on the abusers who ordered materials and did not pick them up. The Friends of the
Library had a great fund raising month in August, raising over $1,700.
New Business: The Friends of the Library agreed to donate about $9,100 for children's programming
and an additional $15,000 to fund adult leased books during the upcoming budget year. The State Aid
application and agreement was approved by the city commission and submitted for state approval. The
library may get a slight increase in the funding for next year. The director discussed his plans to bank the
monies for future technology upgrades.
Library Director's Report: Craig distributed the monthly reports for July and August 2010. He also
distributed the Long Range Plan for 2010-2013. He noted that achievement of some of the goals would
be dependent on appropriate funding.
Craig announced that the library has a new AmeriCorps volunteer, Kristine Johnston. This year's
volunteer, Lindsey, got ajob at the Children's Museum in public relations.
Craig also reported that the Literacy Coalition gave the library accolades for our great Read for the
Record program.
The next library board meeting is October 27,2010 at 4:00 p.m.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:35 p.m.
