V. Chairperson's Remarks
Update on Alternate
Chair Chamberlain introduced new member, Pat Frazier, to the Board. She also
explained Ms. Lynch would submit her application for membership this week and the
Board appointments would be made in December. Alternate positions are one-year
positions and regular positions are two-year positions. She reminded the members up
for reappointment to return the applications sent by the City Clerk's office.
VI. Old Business
Update - Five Wishes program on 10/11/10
Chair Chamberlain explained 10 members from the Senior Center went to Emeritus and
watched a presentation on the program. On October 11, 2010, 100 people signed up
for the presentation at the Senior Center. Gayle Stevens from Community for a Lifetime
presented the Five Wishes program. The program was well attended.
Update - Car/Fit Program on 10/16/10
The Car/Fit program was also held by Community for a Lifetime. Three members from
the committee trained as did other volunteers from the Senior Center. The next
morning, they helped the Area on Aging present the program, along with AAA and the
Department of Transportation. The members were there from 8:00 a.m. to 12 noon.
The program ran from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon and about 19 cars were fitted. The
adjustments take about 25 minutes for each car and three stations were set up.
Attendees received a packet of information with goodies in it and various sponsors were
present. Hot dogs and soda were available. The attendees learned that back seat
passengers were required to use seatbelts. Much of the CarFit program pertained to
adjusting the mirrors to find the blind spot and equipment checks. They adjusted
seatbelts and provided information so seatbelts could be worn comfortably. A tool that
was recommended to drivers that could cut a seat belt and break a window if needed
was for sale.
Discuss Cancellation of September Meeting

Senior Advisory Board
Boynton Beach, FL
November 1, 2010
The next meeting would be held in January and Chair Chamberlain advised they were
considering holding another CarFit event in the future. The Senior Advisory Board
schedules a September meeting but it always falls on Labor Day. Chair Chamberlain
would schedule a September meeting to be held a week later than the regular meeting
date.
VII. New Business
Need two volunteers for committee for the consideration of a new name for
Jaycee Park
Chair Chamberlain received a memo from Wally Majors, Recreation and Parks Director,
who requested two volunteers from the committee sit on a committee to rename Jaycee
Park. It would be one meeting lasting about an hour. Chair Chamberlain and Ms.
Cregan volunteered. Ms. Cregan thought there were several people deserving to be
recognized. If the members had a suggestion for a name, they should contact Chair
Chamberlain or Ms. Cregan with their suggestion.
Reminder on dates for Health Insurance Changes
This item was reviewed because in the past, if an individual wanted to make a change
to their health insurance, they were to do so by March 1. That date was no longer a
valid deadline. The change now had to be made by of December 31. Chair
Chamberlain thought the change should be in the newspaper. While Medicare sends
out a reminder, not all of the recipients read them.
Letters of Commendation for Senior Center or employees of Center for
Recreation
Chair Chamberlain explained she sent a letter commending the Senior Center and Ann
Forster, Recreation Specialist. She also commented Ms. Forster was recognized as the
Star Player of the month last Thursday. The letters should be in reference to the
members' association with the Senior Center, which is now entering its 12th year. Chair
Chamberlain explained it was nice to recognize individuals, especially when they work
so hard and even a small note would suffice. The Center affects many seniors and
many services were available through it.
Senior News Articles
The members were requested to submit articles of interest. Chair Chamberlain
explained a few weeks ago, a Social Security representative was present. A recent
article in the Sun Sentinel entitled No Boost in Social Security, Seniors Shun Self Pity
was read which explained virtually every expense increased with some of the highest
increases in medical expenses. "The increase puts many people in the poor house and
meals at the Senior Center may be the only hot meal the individual receives. The

women at the Senior Center should be congratulated for their lack of whining." Ms.
Cregan was quoted in the article as saying "One benefit of the center was they hear
about deals for seniors including summer breaks on electricity, post hurricane grocery
money. You have to know the things to get them and we find them out from each other
at the Center."
Chair Chamberlain read an excerpt of a USA Weekend article that detailed a new GPS
tracking shoe may help keep memory-challenged seniors safer. The article explained
many Alzheimers patients will remove tracking articles, but they will put on their shoes
even if they do not remember their name or where they are. There is a chip embedded
in the sole of the shoe that is tracked via a cellular network. The cost is $250 or $300.
It was mentioned there is a monthly charge to monitor.
Ms. O'Connell explained there was a new thing with emergency room doctors that if an
individual is cut or has a rash and does not know whether they need to go to the
emergency room, they can take a picture of it with the cell phone and send it to the
emergency room or email it. Someone will look at it, evaluate it and send an email back
whether they need to have medical help. Dermatologists will also be participating, as
would other doctors. This would have a big impact on litigation because there would be
a photograph included as part of the record. It would have a big impact on medical care.
Ms. O'Connell believed they were testing it out.
Ms. Cregan explained she takes advantage of "Doc in a Box" which was phrase she
coined for an urgent care facility. She explained when she fell, emergency personnel
indicated she should go to the hospital. Instead, she visited the urgent care facility.
They stitched her, gave here a painkiller and she was good to go. Discussion followed
most HMOs are offering house calls and going to an emergency room usually results in
being placed on a lengthy waiting list. Some hospitals even have billboards advising
how long the wait is.
New Problems on Seniors from Members
None. Chair Chamberlain advised Ms. Frazier that the Center has informational sheets
available detailing a great deal of information.
Senior Center report - Steve Lulkin
Mr. Lulkin advised since October 1, they started re-registration and they registered
about 400 people. Over 100 people were nonresidents and they are seeing many
snowbirds wintering earlier than usual. Since September, the Center held five special
events:
~ The concert at Pence Park
~ An Anniversary show
~ The Columbus Day pizza lunch

~ CarFit
~ A Halloween event
On November 16, a new sponsor was putting on a show with a comedian and door
prizes. Classes were filling up and the Center was moving along. The Holiday Party
would also be held.
Discussion returned to member appointments. Chair Chamberlain explained if the
members volunteer for a committee, they have to make a commitment. She was aware
one member was in frail health and she explained a quorum is necessary to meet. One
meeting could not be held because they did not have a quorum.
Ms. O'Connell advised she would not be available for the meeting in January as she
would be in Australia. She advised would visit a senior center there as Chair
Chamberlain had done in China.
VIII. Next Meeting Dates: January 3, 2011
IX. Adjournment
There being no further business to discuss, the meeting properly adjourned at 3:39 p.m.
