Library Advisory Board Minutes
October 27, 2010
The Library Advisory Board meeting was called to order at 4:05 p.m. by Chair Jeannie Taylor. All board
members were present with the exception of Valerie Pleasanton and Laurie Sulzer. The minutes of the
September 22,2010, meeting were approved as distributed.
Correspondence: Chair Taylor received two emails, one from Valerie Pleasanton and one from Laurie
Suzler, advising the board of their absences.
Chair Report: None.
Unfinished Business: Library Director, Craig Clark reported that two positions that were slated for layoff
were restored by City Commission.
Kristine Johnson, the library's new AmeriCorps staff was introduced to the Board. Kristine discussed her
background and her current duties here at the Library. Kristine answered questions asked by the Board
and reported that she helps up to 30 kids per day. Kristine will work at the Library 32 hours per week
through July 22, 2011.
Director Clark played an eight minute DVD produced by last year's AmeriCorps staff member Lindsey
Nuzzo. The DVD highlighted the entire year of AmeriCorps participation in Library Programs.
Director Clark announced that interviewing for the two vacant part-time Division Head Librarian
positions was winding down. One candidate was chosen who had extensive background in library
administration and collection development. The other position would be posted again for one additional
week to attract more applicants.
Lisa Kreutter, Teen Services Librarian resigned. That position is on hold and will not be filled at this
time.
New Business: Director Clark and Assistant Director Watts participated in this year's Literacy Expo
2010 held at the PBI Airport Hilton. Various early childhood development materials as well as Adult
ESL materials were displayed to approximately 400 attendees.
Library Director's Report: Director Clark distributed the monthly report for September 2010. He also
distributed Fiscal Year End 09-10 Statistics, which included Total Visitation, Circulation and Computer
Usage Statistics. Circulation over the past five fiscal years increased by 38%. There was an overall 12%
increase or 36,000 in customer visits and a 4% increase in items circulated compared to FY08-09. The
total number of computer appointments totaled 96,913 with an average appointment time of 50-55
minutes each.
The November calendar was distributed. Food for Fines month will take place November I_30th to
benefit the Community Caring Center. There will be a Senior Health Expo November 3rd. The Quilters
sale is taking place in the Program Room. The Quilters have approved the purchase of a new map case
for the Library's Archives area using the money they have raised over the past several years. It will cost
approximately $4,000. Janet DeVries will host a photo preservation workshop November 17th.
Announcements:
The next Library Board meeting is December I, 2010, at 4:00 p.m. The November and December
meetings were combined to one meeting by earlier board vote.
