08.01.02 - Unattended City Owned Vehicles CITY OF BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA ADMINISTRATIVE POLICY MANUAL CHAPTER: 08 City Equipment POLICY NO: 08.01.02 SECTION: 01 Fleet Maintenance Policy PAGE: 1 of 1 SUBJECT: 02 Unattended City Owned Vehicles/Equipment LEAVING A CITY OWNED VEHICLE/EQUIPMENT: It shall be a violation of this policy, Florida Statutes, and the City Safety Manual to leave a motor vehicle unattended with the ignition keys in the ignition switch. When leaving a City owned or operated vehicle/equipment, the ignition keys must be removed, and if practical, all windows shall be closed and the doors locked when parking over night. Under no circumstances shall a City owned or operated vehicle be left unattended or abandoned, due to mechanical breakdown or any other reason without being properly secured. If assistance is needed or required, the operator shall stay with the vehicle until provisions are provided to bring the vehicle into the vehicle maintenance shop by the City’s contract towing service. The operator is responsible for their vehicle security until released by proper authority. WARNING: Never leave a gasoline-powered vehicle running at idle for more than three (3) minutes. The catalytic converter can reach temperatures in excess of 2000 degrees Fahrenheit, and could cause dry grass or other like combustibles to ignite.
