Subject: Inti' Kinetic Art Symposium and Exhibit workshop Summary
Dear Debby,
It was a pleasure speaking with you Saturday morning.
I have attached a summary of our discussion for you regarding Solar
Tree educational program, an solar kinetic environmental education
program. Based on the past experience in Hillsborough, CA and
Princeton, NJ. The mission to teach students and teachers a solar
environmental kinetic curriculum.
In the public school program there are two faculty teachers assigned to
the solar tree program and present during student contact hours. If the
teachers are paid, beyond their regular duties, the cost is $50.- per
hour-per teacher-per student contact hour.
The Solar Tree mural project allows each student (25 to 150) to design
solar leaf, with small photovoltaic cells contained in the leaf. each
participating group of students form a branch. The leaves will be
assembled on the main structure of the tree. While the energy
contribution of each leaf separately is small, all leaves of the together
tree will be able to light a symbolic light. The cost of the program is
predicated on the size location of the mural. The project I discussed in
Spain included my self and four educators in Spain.
Just to review, major expenses is shipping and installation of the kinetic
works. An insured experienced sculpture installations person, with crane
truck is $1500.- to $2000.- per day, additional labor billed at $65.00 per
hour. Expect a ten hour day. In past exhibitions in order to consolidate
2/22/20 I I
Page 2 of2
shipping a specialized art moving firm was hired to pick up and deliver the
sculpture from specific regions. Keep in mind some kinetic are can be installed
in an hour or two, while other more complex kinetic sculpture could consume a
day of installation time. So, it's difficult to estimate without knowing the sites
and pieces involved. De-installation and return shipping.
A curatatorial fees $10,000.- (can be donated by KOA)
Photography,
Catalog Essay, $5,000.-
Catalog production $250.- To 300.- per page
Printing,
Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.
All the best,

ENVIRONMENTAL SCULPTURE
Solar Tree Project
Phase One summary to the City of Boynton Beach
Art in Public Places
February 2011
The Solar Tree Project, a community project involving students, artists and educators with a goal of designing
a sculpture that utilizes energy-producing solar panels. The program will place sculptor Rein Triefeldt in
residence during the 2011 (12) school year to lead teachers and students from the art, engineering, science
and environmental disciplines in a discovery process to learn about sculpture and sustainable energy.
Description: As our country transitions to an energy-oriented economy and society, there is a need to ensure
that people have an understanding of how renewable resources can be used to generate energy, while
reducing humankind's negative impact on the planet. The primary goal of the Solar Tree Project is to educate
the next generation of leaders and consumers about the interrelationship between energy and the
environment, with a specific focus on solar energy.
The Solar Tree Project is an educational program in which sculptor Rein Triefeldt works with students to learn
about energy, renewable resources, the design and creative process of sculpting, and our environment.
Together, during the fall and winter of 2011(12), they will design and fabricate a model of a functioning and
energy generating maquette of a "solar tree" sculpture. At a later date, based on funding, the sculpture could
be fabricated as a functioning and energy generating public sculpture. At the culmination of the project, the
students will be conversant in the fundamentals of sculpture design and will know how solar panels use the
sun to create useable energy.
Delivery Method: Artist-in-residence Rein Triefeldt will work with a lead instructor at a local University,
College, High, Middle or Elementary Schools to customize the Solar Tree curriculum to the appropriate pace
and level of the students. The artist, instructor and class will meet daily, as scheduled workshop or weekly as
an after-school club, to disseminate information and begin the conceptual and design process. Sessions can
be supplemented by visits from solar technology experts as well as art experts.
Audience: The Solar Tree Project will include students, with lead and assistant instructors to be selected from
the school faculty.
Costs: The total budget for the Solar Tree Project, Phase One as follows; $10,000 honorarium for the artist.
Additional reimbursable artist expenses include, travel, lodging, food, Discretionary: $5,000 for materials,
printing costs, postage and delivery costs, stipends for third party guest presenters and administrative support
- including overhead costs such as insurance, office supplies and internet fees.
Continuation of project: The ultimate goal for the Solar Tree Project is to fabricate and install a full scale
public solar sculpture In Boynton Beach. The solar sculpture will ultimately make a powerful green
environmental statement for the City of Boynton Beach, and provide clean renewable energy for credit back to
the grid, actual location to be determined through the cooperation City of Boynton Beach, Art in Public Places.
Budget range $35 - 250,000 to complete. Installation cost is predicated on location.
Fundraising: Additional support for this project can be applied for through local corporations and individuals,
utility companies, private foundations, DOE, EPA grants. Tax credits or incentives to consider 30 % federal tax
grant and accelerated depreciation on the solar installation. If the organization qualifies for accelerated
depreciation 70% of the installation cost is deductible in the first year. (2011 tax year)

Biography
Sid has been a sculptor by avocation for over thirty years, working in wood, stone, and clay.
~e has been exhibiting his work for the past ten years in juried exhibits in South Florida and has won
~umerous awards. His abstract sculptures - primarily ceramic pieces which often incorporate wood
components - are in private collections throughout the United States. He is a Signature Exhibiting
rhember of The Artist s Guild of the Boca Raton Museum of Art. Sid has studied art at Penland School
df Art in North Carolina and Palm Beach State College, but he is mostly self-taught. He holds
~achelor s and master s degrees from the University of Wisconsin and has done extensive doctoral
Jtudies in educational methodology and adult education at Florida International University. He has
~ad an extensive career in Art Education, Art Administration, and University Administration. Sid is a
fbunder of Miami s prestigious New World School of the Arts. He has taught classes in Clay
I
Sculpture and Ceramics at the Boca Raton Museum s Art School since 2002.
I
trtist Statement
In creating my sculptures, I build on a thought or message. Each piece clearly says something to me
dnd my challenge is to convey that message to the observers. I create unique objects with complex
dngineering in design and construction that prompt the viewer to figure out not only what it means but
dlso how it was made. My works incorporate color, texture, and reflectivity. It pleases me to observe
tewers study my sculptures and see their reactions.
Metamorphosis: This piece captures the cycle of life with the open spheres being representative of
docoons nurturing the developing forms. The most mature sphere gives birth to the next generation to
~tart the life cycle all over again. The spheres are mounted on a cantilevered weathered cedar beam
that was salvaged from an overgrown yard. As an artist, I am constantly on the lookout for materials
I
that can be recycled and incorporated into my art.
I
ljripodious Wilma: For most of my sculptures, I build the pedestal to fit the ceramic components.
~or this piece, Hurricane Wilma handed me the superstructure, I had to create the sculpture to fit the
I:lase. While the hurricane tore down the power pole serving my home causing great inconvenience,
it created the opportunity to recycle a portion of the pole into several of my sculptures. The message
i~ Tripodious Wilma is to recognize the unyielding power of the hurricane and tame it by partnering it
with the serenity of the tri-colored spheres or pods. The title reflects the strength of the new tripod as
~ell as the three sculptural, reflective pods.
I
- Spla& a nanosecond of a splash: This complex construction focuses on our most precious resource
df water. Utilizing a frozen moment in time, I magnify the simplicity of a single drop of water calling
dttention to the fact that every drop counts. The mirror in the base is recycled from an old dressing
I
trle.
Technical Info: All pieces include ceramic sculptures with assorted bases of recycled materials -
Jeathered timber, fallen power pole, and a mirror (from dressing table).
