Minutes 02-23-11 CITY OF BOYNTON BEACH Boynton Beach City Library Library Advisory Board Minutes February 23, 2011 The Library Advisory Board meeting was called to order at 4:00 p.m. by Chair Jeannie Taylor. All board members were present. The minutes of the January 2011 meeting were approved as distributed. Correspondence: None. Chair's Report: Chair Jeannie Taylor distributed an article from the American Library Association requesting advocacy for federal library funding. The board discussed briefly the pending legislation and funding pressures due to the economy. Unfinished Business: Library Director, Craig Clark introduced Mae Giaimo, new part-time Division Head, who will be overseeing the Customer Service Department among other duties. Mae gave the board a brief overview of her library experience. She has already begun work on a staff manual in order to standardize procedures and requirements. The board welcomed Ms. Giaimo to the library. Craig gave an update on library security under the revised security procedures. The security problems seem to be getting better. He also noted that State Aid funding was included in the governor's new budget. BBCL uses the funds for technology upgrades. Assistant Director, Anne Watts, gave an update on the Adult Reading Club program, which she stated was quite popular. Several patrons have already completed reading their ten books. The Friends' author luncheon was a big success, raising almost $4,000. The event was well attended. Anne recounted funny moments during the signed armadillo auction which brought in $200 and stated that the event was great fun. The Friends' bookstore has also raised over $27,000 since opening, including $1,661 in January. New Business: None. Library Director's Report: Craig distributed the monthly report for January 2011. Customer visits were up 7%, while young adult circulation was down II % due to not having a Y A librarian at present. Craig discussed staffing and stated that he expects the part-time replacement for Alice to start sometime in mid- March. A discussion regarding the quiet study rooms upstairs was held. Craig stated that since changing the policy governing use, there have been no further problems. The students are grateful for the quiet study space.
