Minutes 03-23-11 CITY OF BOYNTON BEACH Boynton Beach City Library Library Advisory Board Minutes March 23, 2011 The library advisory board meeting was called to order at 4:00 p.m. by Chair Jeannie Taylor. All board members were present except for Barbara Erlichman. The minutes of the February 2011 meeting were approved as corrected (Correspondence and Chairs Report were switched) . Correspondence: None. Chair's Report: None. Unfinished Business: Library Director, Craig Clark discussed the budget process for the 2011-2012 year. He stated that the City Manager had requested a 9% cut for the budget in light of the expected shortfall in municipal income. Craig indicated that such severe cuts would require cuts in open hours, staffing, and materials. He also discussed the upcoming report from the City's Financial Advisory Committee. Budget hearings are scheduled for July 11-13 and Craig requested board members to attend. The Lake Worth Library has recently announced it will also be cutting staff and hours. Craig attended the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County luncheon along with other city officials and staff. The speaker, a chefwho learned to read at age 26, emphasized the value of libraries. The coalition will be building a facility in Boynton to provide additional literacy training rooms. New Business: E-Readers: The Friends are providing $500 for purchase of three E-readers and various titles to be loaded on them. Policies regarding the E-readers will be presented at the next meeting for board approval. The E-reader use will be directed towards large print and elderly patrons. LST A Grant: The library has applied for an LST A grant of $9890 to purchase additional E-readers and 500 more titles. Summer Reading Club - Boynton High Partnership: A summer reading program targeting teens will have various incentives for the kids. The high school received a grant for additional reading materials, half of which will be housed at this library. A teacher will be coordinating the program and the AmeriCorps volunteers will also be participating. The regular summer reading program will begin June 6th. The Friends are funding the programming costs for the children's summer programs. Library Director's Report: Craig distributed the monthly report for February 2011. Customer visits were up 5%, while circulation was down 6%. Craig announced that the Boynton Woman's Club historical collection has been donated to the library archives. Craig also mentioned that he will be on vacation next month and that he would miss the meeting.
