V. ANNOUNCEMENTS/REPORTS
A. June 16, 2011 Meeting Date
Chair Ready announced the next meeting will be on June 16, 2011.
B. FAPAP Conference
Ms. Coles-Dobay advised the Florida Association for Public Art Professionals (FAPAP)
conference took place in Palm Beach County. It was a success with prominent speakers
and presenters in attendance. Projects were covered from West Palm Beach to
Boynton, and included informative sessions and panel discussions. The conference
included the “Year in Review” which was comprised of all the other public art programs
in the State of Florida. That information will be available and posted on the FAPAP
website for review. Next year’s conference will be held in Ft. Myers.
C. Green Building Ordinance and Eco Art
Ms. Coles-Dobay advised on April 27, 2011, the City Commission adopted a green
building program and is now an Ordinance. This program is the second of its kind in the
nation. It incorporates much of the green construction codes in the International Green
Construction Codes (IGCC) and was accomplished with input from the Green Alliance
Committee. The program’s main objective is to add incentives for people to construct
green buildings in the City of Boynton Beach. More information can be obtained from
the City’s website under the section “Go Green Boynton” where the news release and
the Ordinance are explained. In the language of the green building program, Eco Art
was mentioned and how, within the Public Art Ordinance, Eco Art is an elective for
projects that come in and green credits are obtained. With Eco Art, extra credits are
received for the Public Art component of the project. The Palm Beach Literary Coalition
is interested in doing some Eco Art and going through the City’s Green Building
Program. The project currently is only for commercial and is not a residential

Ordinance yet. Boynton Beach was included in an Eco Arts presentation that was done
on the America for the Arts Webinar.
VI. INT’L KINETIC ART SYMPOSIUM AND EXHIBIT PLANNING
A. Brief Overview
Ms. Coles-Dobay indicated the document that was put together gave the essence of
what the project was about and should be used as information when discussing with
potential sponsors, partners, committees or volunteers to help with the project. Ms.
Coles-Dobay explained that Ralfonso and Tom Brewitz, two kinetic artists, have shown
interest in participating in the Symposium. Ralfonso is on the International Sculpture
Committee, which is the national publication for Sculpture Magazine and while at a
meeting in New York a few weeks ago, spoke about what the City is doing and they
seemed receptive to the idea of participating. Rein Triefeldt is another artist working on
the education portion for the K-12 school district.
Ms. Coles-Dobay asked the Board members to review the draft package and make
suggestions. The package contains website links that demonstrate the idea of kinetic art
and hopefully we will have a DVD to include in the package as part of the promotional
tools. Also included in the draft package was the committee list that contained the items
to be completed, committees that will be formed and what had been accomplished to
date. The components for discussion are the academia programming, the symposium
and the exhibit.
There was lengthy discussion on the bullets of the draft document. Some of the items
discussed were the Committees and its members, location of the exhibits, different
types of kinetic art exhibited and which ones would be showcased for outdoor and
indoor exhibits. There is a list of kinetic artists through the ASCI, an Arts and Sciences
association that helped promote this program and through that there have been artists
interested in this project that wished to be part of the panel, speakers or exhibits. There
was also discussion on the budget and the additional cost for doing the additional
exhibit, outside the Avenue of the Arts which is at a fixed cost, and to add additional
dollars to be able to get more iconic pieces that could highlight the upcoming event. The
Avenue of the Arts is a yearlong program, if some of the bigger and more impressive
kinetic pieces could be brought in and displayed, it could help promote the event.
When looking at the sponsorship levels, the entire budgeted cost is $155,000. If
someone were to sponsor at that level, it would cover all the components of the
program. If it were broken down, $75,000 would cover the Academic Programming
costs, $50,000 for the Symposium, and $30,000 for the exhibit.

Meeting Minutes
Arts Commission Meeting
Boynton Beach, FL May 24, 2011
Ms. Coles-Dobay advised she had spoken with the Palm Beach County School District,
Arts Integration Department, and Dr. Pierson and Jeffrey Pressler were both very
receptive to this idea. She advised she is now working with Karen Nobel to execute the
idea and discussed the possibility of obtaining a $5,000 grant. Mr. Triefeldt put together
a proposal and once Ms. Nobel receives it, she will put it in as allocation of dollars to
submit to that program. The goal is to get it all funded this year so that some of the
artwork could be displayed for the Workshop in February 2012 that will kick off the
project for February 2013.
Ms. Coles-Dobay stressed the importance of developing and using known contacts for
securing sponsorships. There was discussion among the members and all shared
ideas on possible sponsorship ideas and the marketing of the event itself and possibly
promoting it as a green project.
B. Committees with updates
After reviewing the different committees and bulleted items, along with the suggested
committee members, Ms. Coles-Dobay advised the idea was to have most of the items
formulated and accomplished this year and integrating all the different committees into
the projects so it could be advertised, marketed and promoted to logistically pull it all
together.
C. General Discussion
Chair Ready suggested that when approaching potential sponsors, it would be a good
idea to suggest to them to put funding aside not only for this year, but for the following
year, as well.
Ms. Coles-Dobay reviewed the symposium details to date in addition to the items on the
draft agenda. The idea for that weekend was to not only have speakers who are kinetic
artists, but that have their artwork on display. Mr. Davenport was in the process of
putting together a book that could be used as a souvenir book that incorporates
education, kinetic art, pictures of the artists and artwork on display. The artists, whose
artwork was displayed in the book, could also sign it.
The types of vendors targeted to be a part of the symposium would be galleries,
technology for kinetic art, and fabrication among others. The committee members were
asked to begin thinking of vendors that could potentially be invited to this event. There
will be vendors and kinetic art exhibits both indoors and outdoors. The majority of the
exhibit would be at the Library and the Civic Center. The panels and discussions would
be held in the City Chambers. A possibility for the VIP reception would be to use the
Children’s Schoolhouse Museum, and workshops could be done at the Art Center.
There would be different activities at different times according to a published program,
as well as activities geared toward different age groups. There was discussion among

the members and guests on ideas of possible expansion ideas for the future. The focus
this year was to be at a more serious, small-scale level. Possibly in the future this could
be expanded to the Avenue with additional activities for children like face painting and
additional types of vendors. Ms. Richman Wolf mentioned to the group that she worked
in the past with a kinetic artist helping children create kinetic art and that may be an idea
to use with this symposium. There was discussion among the group on different
activities that could be done which would be geared toward the children. Ms. Coles-
Dobay advised the program was also being promoted to the Palm Beach County school
system so there would be more youth and youth related activities. The Art Center could
be recruited to assist as they already have these types of programs available and their
resources could be utilized. She advised she spoke to the Director and was told if
enough notice was given, they could provide accommodations for the day.
th
It was decided that another brainstorming session would take place at the June 16
meeting.
VII. PROJECT UPDATES
A. Seacrest Streetscape project update
Ms. Cole-Dobay shared the picture of the finished product. The artwork was delivered
but the pads had not been started yet. An outside group will install it as the artist who
originally was going to do it will be out of the area by then.
VIII. EXHIBITS
A. Avenue of the Arts
- Document for 2010/11
Ms. Richman noted a typographical error in the document and it was brought to the
attention of Ms. Coles-Dobay for editing and distribution.
Motion
Dr. North made a motion to approve the solicitation letter as amended. Ms. Richman
seconded the motion which unanimously passed.
B. Civic Center – Coastal Life Theme
The same information used in the Avenue of the Arts document would be used for this.
The idea was there is outdoor artwork that speaks to the Coastal Life theme and
opportunity should be given to those that cannot submit artwork for the outdoor exhibit
to have an indoor exhibit. It was done the same way last year. Ms. Coles-Dobay asked
for consensus to continue doing it this way.

Motion
Ms. Moeller made a motion to continue using the same theme for indoor and outdoor
exhibits. Ms. Richman seconded the motion that unanimously passed.
C. Sims Center - New Theme
Ms. Coles-Dobay reminded the members that the Sims Center represents a "family
center" and the artwork should depict that setting. There was discussion on the new
theme of "Azure Seas, Colorful Foliage" and the member's opinions were expressed on
the title. After a lengthy discussion on possible title changes, the consensus was to use
"Azure Seas, Tropical Breezes".
