Arts Commission February 28, 2012 back up materials Boynton Lakes Plaza Public Art Boynton Lakes Plaza call to artists was for a clock tower for the corner tower feature in the Plaza. Once the developer, architect and public artist began to work on the concepts, location and materials it was determined that the "Clock" and associated mosaics would not be the best product for this project because: The clock mechanism would be an expensive component of the public art The clock would have a higher maintenance schedule then the plaza developers desired. While the 42" diameter mosaics surrounding the clock would be visible to the plaza pedestrian and vehicular traffic the additional 36" mosaics on the tower sides would not. After much consideration of these factors it was determined that showcasing the plazas main tower feature entrance with the mosaics would allow the public art component the most visibility and interaction with the public. Decorative tile trim (not public art) at the top area of the tower and at other locations throughout the plaza will tie in nicely with the tower archway mosaics. The new tower archway mosaics public art will provide a featured entrance for the plaza visitors, allow maximize visibility of the public art mosaics and utilize all of the public art funds on the art feature for the plaza. 240 Pilgrim Rd West Palm Beach, FL. 33405 561 - 429 -3428 cell 321 - 277 -4769 suzikedwards @aol.com www.suzikedwards.com "Mosaic Arch for Clock Tower" Public Art Feature - Boynton Lakes Plaza 4740 -4796 N. Congress Avenue Boynton Beach, FL 33462 Boynton Lakes Plaza is a mixed -use retail and restaurant space owned and operated by Regency Inc, of Jacksonville, Florida. The anchor store is Publix. Mosaic and ceramic artist, Suzi K. Edwards, has been chosen to create decorative mosaics to surround the arched entry to the tower. The mosaics will be fabricated on duroroc using glass mosaic tiles, and ceramic hand -made elements The theme of tropical foliage with flora and fauna was chosen by Ms. Edwards to coordinate with existing architectural details. There is a concrete border of grapes, grapevines and leaves on the tower, and in other areas of the Plaza. The arch will feature a large sun at the top, which will be fabricated using brilliant gold glass tiles. The ceramic elements: parrots, monkeys, mangos, bananas and foliage will be fabricated out of stoneware, painted with colorful underglazes and glazed will a clear gloss glaze. Stoneware is remarkably durable. The mosaics will be surrounded by a 2" precast concrete band that will be installed by the builder. This will create a visual border and protect the mosaics. The mosaics will be grouted and sealed, and will require no special maintenance. An annual cleaning with soap and water and a stiff brush will keep them looking perfect for decades. PROJECT BUDGET: $14,000.00 (includes all specs detailed above) to be paid to Ms. Edwards by Regency Properties. till k7t 0 I W _ v H €_ > v - v file, m mj _ Wo a r^ffike I I I (OOOMAIE e0 S> $$ N Q-i a I / E '&r I J ¢ I d °.nN° n- I d 'G aom Pe d 5 °ca e.6 .. Thelma "Temmie" Baratz in commissioned artwork from Mr. Wigus for several thousand dollars. Mr. Wigus. a woodworker by trade, created this artwork from real wood and building materials hand cutting and assembling each piece to create this European looking City scene. Thelma's family wanted to donate this piece to the City through Rick beauLieu who appraised several of Thelma's artwork collection. Library director Craig Clark thought the piece would work well in the spacious wall that link the North Library entrance to the main Library Lobby. Rick Beau Lieu offered to hang the artwork once the Arts Commission approved the donation and location. a -_ ® — r _. « © .t . — '' . . .... - .
