Eighth Air Force
May 9, 2012
Mr. Kaiser,
As we have previously discussed, the Eighth Air Force deserves our
consideration at our Memorial site on Federal highway. In some ways
they never did get the recognition they deserved. The Eighth was
activated Feb. 1, 1942 as part of the Army Air Corps and it was not
until Feb. 22, 1944 that it was re- designated as the Eighth Air Force.
In many ways the Submariners and the Tuskegee Airmen are the same
as the Eighth Air Force: All three groups were part of another group; all
three groups made significant contributions to the success of each main
Force; and last but not least, it is our responsibility to keep the
memories alive to be passed on.
Some of the contributions of the "Mighty Eighth" include:
1 One half of the Army Air Corps casualties in WW2 were from the
Eighth with 47,000 casualties and 26,000 dead.
2 Seventeen Medals of Honor were awarded, along with 220
Distinguished Service Crosses and 261 Fighter Ace Awards
3. 305 gunners were also recognized Aces
