Library Advisory Board Minutes
March 28, 2012
The Library Advisory Board meeting was called to order at 4:00 p.m. by Chair Jeannie Taylor. All board
members were present. The minutes of the February 22, 2012 meeting were approved as distributed.
Correspondence: There was no correspondence.
Chair's Report: None.
Unfinished Business:
- Library Director, Craig Clark, reported that the new Overdrive e -Books system will launch April 7 during
National Library Week. Staff training is underway and there will be approximately 500 titles in the opening
day shared collection. Each of the cooperating 13 libraries also has its own private collection to lend to its
patrons. A discussion of pricing issues between electronic and print versions was held. Craig encouraged
everyone to check out the new service.
- Craig also reported that our data has been moved to the hosted Sirsi / Dynix Contract Check -out and
Cataloging system servers in Atlanta. The move has freed up some staff time for other projects.
-The Adult Reading club had 294 patrons registered and 92 completed which was down from the previous
year The program ends on April 6th
- The Unique Management Collection Services report for Feb 2012 was distributed to the board. The
company continues to collect materials and fines which were previously uncollectible. The staff has begun
sending emails two days before materials are due in an effort to increase the on -time return rate.
New Business: Craig presented the draft 2012 -2013 Library Budget Request to the board The base
assumption for the budget is a zero - increase bottom line. He noted that increases in employee pension plan
funding and employee health insurance have driven huge cuts in other areas, especially the book budget
which may be cut by 47% compared to last year The board discussed the viability of the library lending
program with materials being cut so drastically. It was pointed out by board members that drastic cuts in the
book budget have severe long -term effects as it often takes many years to get back to previous spending
levels. Craig also announced some changes in staffing. The board discussed public donations of magazines
and books and whether they were helping bolster the under - funded materials budget this year
Library Director's Report: Craig announced that a ribbon cutting ceremony would be held during Earth
Week on the library's new electric vehicle charging station. He invited board members to attend the
ceremony on April 21 at 9:30am. Craig also distributed the monthly report for February 2012 and noted
that circulation is creeping up again. He reported that Mayor Hay spent one day with the library staff learning
what goes on behind the scenes at the library.
The next Library Board meeting is April 25, 2012 at 4.00 p.m. The meeting was adjourned at 5 p.m.
